Possibly the worst kept secret in world football was out of the bag on Monday as Manchester City announced that the verbal agreement between the pair reached last spring, was now a formal, written agreement. The current Bayern Munich manager will replace Manuel Pellegrini at the end of this season.
Members of VG TIPS were confidently told of this information last May. That’s because I first received good information from a trusted source in Spain. I placed my first bet. Within minutes I contacted another friend – someone who has been close to Guardiola since his reign at Barcelona. He too confirmed that Pep had verbally agreed to join Man City.
I am not a big fan of so called info. As members of my tipping service know, I prefer to trust my own judgement. But when I received solid information from two sources I trust, then I had to pass it on to members. I warned them via e-mail that they would have to be patient and that anything could change. Football is a funny game that way.
But I do know that Pep Guardiola is a man of his word. It would have been out of character had he gone back on his word, even with the Chelsea and Manchester United jobs his for the taking.
Manuel Pellegrini will have also known that he was going to be replaced. He has conducted himself as I would have expected. He is a class act and he’ll not want for another job. Real Madrid or Malaga would, for example, have him back tomorrow. And he’ll have offers in England.
Manchester City must give Pep Guardiola time to build a dynasty. Yes, he will have access to vast sums of money. He will need to rebuild the squad but, if City treat him correctly, he will also build the playing side of the club from the youth team upwards. Manchester City have the opportunity to not only be the “noisy neighbours” to United, but also – at last – a Champions League winning club.
As for me, my winnings on those two bets placed nine months ago are in the bank.
