Watch Westover easily win Irish Derby for members of VG Tips

WESTOVER won the Irish Derby at the Curragh. Just as I predicted he would do when sending members of VG Tips my Saturday racing tips.

I confess that in the days running up to the race I was surprised and a little stunned at some usually wise voices, including ex jockeys, who dismissed the chances of Westover out of hand. Some pundits asked for their opinion said that they didn’t rate the performance of Westover in the earlier English Derby, when the Ralph Beckett trained colt finished third. They believed the problem of  Westover being stuck in traffic that day had been exaggerated. They conceded that he would have finished second at Epsom but would not have gone on to beat Desert Crown. I agree with the latter but there is no doubting that being trapped on the rail two furlongs from home did Westover no favours. But for that, he would have finished closer to Desert Crown. And when it came to tipping the winner of the Irish Derby, there was no opponent of the quality of Desert Crown.

Until Aidan O’Brien surprisingly entered the filly Tuesday into the Irish Derby – she was supplemented for the race – Westover had been the clear bookies favourite. But then the money came for Tuesday and many an expert believed she could be the first filly to win the Irish Derby since 1994. I did not underestimate her chances. Indeed, I thought she would give Westover more of a run for his money than turned out to be the case (Tuesday finished fourth). But I was always with Westover, believing in that eye-catching display at Epsom.

Winner! Westover

The hiring of Colin Keane to take over in the saddle only made me more confident. The Irish jockey could ride the Curragh blindfolded. But such was the excellent performance of Westover that his usual jockey, Rob Hornby, would have also won the Irish Derby.
