Seldom has the author of a sports book shown more surprise at winning an award than was the case when David Goldblatt heard his book, The Game of Our Lives, had beaten off five other finalists to land the title of William Hill Sports Book of the Year.
When his win was announced by John Inverdale, David’s face displayed astonishment. His controversial book, which is critical of certain organisations, football clubs, their supporters and individuals, is a very readable account of where football is now – and how it got to this point.
Winning the William Hill award is a great boost to any author, especially as Christmas book sales take off. Solvency is an unknown quantity to most authors. But not those who win this prestigious award.
I interviewed all six finalists at the always well organised event and my on camera chats with the other five will appear here over the coming days, along with more photographs from the event.
First up, here’s my interview with the winner, David Goldblatt.
