Tanzeel, an 8/1 winner for members of VG TIPS on Saturday, was one such case. On Friday I kept looking at the form of the horse, at his price at that time and the many opponents due to take him on. I got on. Pronto!
Here’s what I told members in their daily e-mail the night before racing: “Tanzeel returned to racing after an absence of 347 days when fourth (of five) at Newcastle in June. But Tanzeel was only a length and three quarters behind the useful winner, Bushcraft. Now that the cobwebs have been blown away, I fancy Tanzeel could return to the winning ways of one year ago.”
The Sky Bet Dash was raced over 6 furlongs at York. There was one stage of the race when I worried if James Doyle was going to be able to get Tanzeel to the front. The gelding still looked a little race rusty, at least in the early and middle parts of the race.
But the penny dropped. Doyle found the space and once Tanzeel was in the open he got better and better. He ran on to win by 2 lengths at an SP price of 11/2. That was still a good price.
But the 8/1 was even better!
On a day when so much attention was focussed on non runners and cock ups at Ascot, the most pleasing sight for me was Tanzeel justifying my confidence.
