  • I've long believed use of the word "pressure" as it applies to football is misplaced.

Pressure belongs to those saving lives. Surgeons, doctors, nurses. Not football managers. Sorry, but the likes of Neil Warnock need to get things in perspective. He lost his rag last weekend when his Cardiff City were on the receiving end of a bad decision. Chelsea players were clearly offside for their equalising goal. Terrible error by the linesman who said his line of vision was blocked by a Chelsea player.

Warnock failed to mention how his side benefited from a penalty that never was . . .

The great city of Liverpool will be busy this weekend.

On Saturday it will be packed for the Grand National - a race for which I have tipped the winner each of the past three years.

But the three day meeting as a whole is a very good one. Often in the shadow of the Cheltenham Festival in March, the Aintree meeting deserves more attention and plaudits.

The fences at Aintree remain testing. They may have been made safer in recent years, and rightly so. But they are still a test of jumping and it's always worth looking out for . . .

  • A 12/1 winning accumulator for me and members. Hurrah! Get In. Excuse me for celebrating but there have been a few near misses of late so I am blooming well going to shout about the winning acca that was made up of wins by Crystal Palace, Norwich, Charlton and Tranmere.

10 individual selections were offered to members. 8 of which won. That included a draw between Stoke City and Sheffield Wednesday at odds of 21/10. I am always pleased when I call a draw correctly. It's hard to do so.

In addition to that draw, the winning . . .

The turf flat season proper begins at Doncaster on Saturday with the always competitive Lincoln Handicap.

The problem for punters at this stage of the season is that we have little or often no form to go on. Most of the horses racing at Doncaster tomorrow have not been seen racing since last autumn. We cannot know which of them will be ready to perform well first time out after several months away from racing.

To my mind the flat turf season proper really gets going in May. At this most early stage of the season it is wise for . . .

  • I don't think I'll be touching the Euro 2020 qualifying market again until such time as it is clearer as to which countries are doing the best. As stated previously, the odds about the most likely winning teams are always painfully short. England have begun the campaign in good form with two victories and ten goals. But I still can't back them at very short odds on prices.

As the most recent results proved, I am better off betting on domestic fixtures. Last weekend we enjoyed wins by Blackpool at odds of 19/10, Exeter City at . . .

It was two winners and two seconds on Wednesday. A day for those who don’t mind backing shorties.

My own mind has already turned to the English and Scottish Grand Nationals, staged within the first twelve days of April. I already have my fancies.

Personally speaking I am clinging on to the jumps season as long as I possibly can. I know the official flat season is almost upon us but, for me at least, it only gets serious in May.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this past jumps season and it ain’t over yet.

    Saturday
