  • Winter is coming and so, I suspect, is the sack for some managers. Club owners have a decision to make. Do you give a seemingly failing manager until Christmas to turn results around - by which time it may be too late - or do you fire them now and try to get in a replacement that can steady a sinking ship?

It's faintly ludicrous that the sports pages in Scotland are awash with speculation that Neil Lennon could be fired at Celtic because the club have not won in three games. Imagine if all clubs sacked their manager after a . . .

  • Good work once again by Robert Ryan up in Scotland last weekend. He tipped the Double Chance bet (win OR draw) for Aberdeen versus Celtic at odds of 11/8. The game ended 3-3 and that allows Rangers to extend their league at the top of the Scottish Premiership. They are now six points clear having played one more game than Celtic.  Robert also tipped wins for Motherwell, Dundee and Dunfermiline. Thanks Robert.

Down south, I tipped a Crystal Palace away win at Fulham at good odds of 17/10, Reading to win again at a generous price of . . .

Wednesday went well with four winners from six races selected for subscribers.

I foolishly opposed the Paul Nicholls runner in the first race I analysed and will not be doing that too often this new turf jumps season. But the winners came thick and fast thereafter.

ACT OF WISDOM won on the flat at SP odds of 10/3, which was value. BAD BOY POULDO was a 9/4 winner for us. The price about my tip UNCAVER got better on the day and that won a bumper at odds of 11/8 and . . .

Let me first welcome Robert and Neil back to VG Tips after their time away. People come and go and that's fine. Life can get in the way of us betting and some subscribers to my service are more interested in jumps racing over winter than flat racing in the spring and summer.

I confess that this one time flat comes first punter is now resolutely far more excited by National Hunt meetings. Over recent seasons I have become increasingly concerned about the quality of flat racing. Of course, these things can be cyclical and we cannot expect to . . .

  • Whatever became of coaching footballers how to defend? It seems to be a lost art. Or one Premier League clubs have discarded (along with sending real people to scout at football games rather than relying on DVD's or statistics).

Jose Mourinho said his Spurs players were "psychologically weak" and that was the reason for their late collapse at home against West Ham. Tottenham were leading 3-0 and comfortable with twenty minutes to spare. Mourinho made a double substitution and, within minutes, West Ham had pulled done goal back. They scored three times in the final twelve minutes of . . .
