Racing at Ludlow was abandoned on Wednesday due to fog and frost. Those who run the course had hoped the fog would lift, so left the decision late. That will have been a nuisance for the trainers who sent their horses to the racecourse.

So much work goes into preparing horses on a day of racing. The stable staff are up bright and early and it's not simply a matter of putting the horse in its box and taking to the road. But at least Ludlow made the right decision. Eventually.

At Haydock, meanwhile, the clerk of the course . . .

  • The winning midweek tips were Leciester City to win to nil at odds of 11/8. Jamie Vardy to score anytime for them at odds of 4/6. Both teams to score in the match between Chelsea and Aston Villa at 4/5 and a win for Wolves at odds of 4/5.

I didn't see Liverpool beating Everton 5-2 in the Merseyside derby. So often over the years, this clash of the teams on opposite sides of Stanley Park has resulted in a low scoring game. But Everton are so bad now that Liverpool went through them . . .

  • It's that time of the season. The time clubs choose to sack their managers. At the time of writing, Unai Emery has gone from Arsenal and Quique Sanchez Flores has been shown the exit door at Watford, for the second time.

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that the problem with underachieving football clubs may be higher up the pay scale? The owners. The players.  Earlier this week I heard football journalist John Cross allege that Emery was "a terrible choice" by Arsenal. I would actually say that Arsenal was a terrible choice by Emery. A coach who achieved . . .

Last Saturday threw up some surprising results and I had to make do with each way placed returns, including in the feature race at Newbury.

On Sunday, meanwhile, racing in Ireland delivered me three short price winners (2/1, 2/1 and 4/5). All good value for their victories. I was pleased to hear back from so many subscribers to VG Tips who had put those three in a triumphant treble. I only wish I had. Life got in the way. Annoying when that happens.

But winners are winners regardless of the prices and I have to say I . . .

You have to feel for those who run Doncaster racecourse. A two day meeting wiped out this week, with racing there on Saturday the latest casualty of the weather.

Much of South Yorkshire has been waterlogged of late. Having been a victim of flooding myself in years past, I feel for the residents of the area. It’s a horrible experience and, frankly, losing a race meeting is insignificant compared to having your home flooded.

Racing went ahead at Newbury on Friday and will do so again on Saturday when no rain is forecast for the Berkshire racecourse.

    I have . . .

  • Some weeks betting on the outcome of football matches is all about the obvious ones. The teams you can reasonably expect to win. Home bankers, perhaps.
There was a time when you could rely on certain teams to deliver for you and in certain leagues being predictable. Neither is assured these days.

On the back of my 20/1 winning accumulator of last weekend, the midweek football results sprung a surprise or two. What I call ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ (so named after a television show many of you will be too young to remember).

    I cannot explain what has . . .

Champ and Paisley Park both won for us as expected on Friday, each at odds on prices. No great surprises there.

I am annoyed at myself for not tipping or backing Old Grangewood, which beat Kalashnikov by a nose earlier on the Friday card. Having tipped that one the previous time out, I did consider going in again today, but thought Kalashnikov might be too good at too shorter price. He almost was. But missing out on the 6/1 on offer about Old Grangewood will haunt me for a little while.

But you have no time in this punting . . .

The jumps season is warming up nicely and trainers have their chief targets in mind. They include the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day and, of course, the Cheltenham Festival next March. I will soon be writing my ‘ones to watch out for’ preview of some of the big races we can look forward to this winter and next spring.

This coming Saturday we have a race I will always call the Hennessy Gold Cup. A shame they stopped sponsoring the race after so many years. It’s another race now sponsored by a bookie.

    Those . . .

  • WAHAY!

A 20/1 winning football accumulator pays out for myself and several of my lovely football loving members of VG Tips. I offered five teams to win last weekend. They all did. Liverpool, Leeds, Wycombe, Northampton and Swindon.

A nice win for us all and proof once again that patience is a virtue for football accumulator punters. We’ve had some near misses already this season. A 20/1 winning acca makes the wait worthwhile. I'd like to thank Matt Pearson of Luton Town who was credited with a 90th minute own goal that . . .

Hands up who backed 50/1 winner Militarian on Friday. No, me neither. It was that sort of day. That was one almighty surprise win for a horse that clearly enjoyed going over three miles for the first time. I doubt that even the trainer, who also owns the gelding, could have seen that coming. Well done him. That must have been a special moment and it's always refreshing to see the lesser known trainers getting a big price winner.

I could only manage a 4/5 winner from four races selected on the day. That was Very First . . .
