  • Cheltenham Festival ante-post analysis and fancies. Part 3. March 3

    By on 3rd March 2020

One week to go until the Cheltenham Festival of 2020. The roar will reverberate around Prestbury Park, Cheltenham. You can hear the roar back in town and further afield. The hairs on the back of the neck of those attending will stand to attention.

It's a great setting for the best race meeting to be seen anywhere in the world. Just so long as the coronavirus does not lead to the government calling off sporting events, the crowds will flock to Cheltenham for four days of top class National Hunt racing.

The weather has been the bigger threat to . . .

  • Wembley Stadium was not sold out for the League Cup final. What an indictment on the greedy people who run the game. Both the FA and EFL. Manchester City supporters have lots of big games to attend and watching football in person these days is an expensive hobby.

With Wembley it's not simply a case of build it (in the wrong location) and they will come. Match tickets have to be priced at a level which the man and woman in the street can afford. I have no idea how any parent can afford to take children to watch . . .

Surely not. I refuse to believe the notion that the Cheltenham Festival would be called off because of the Coronavirus. Call that off and you'd have to expect every mass gathering sporting fixture to be postponed or abandoned altogether.

I did hear someone suggest that the festival could take place behind closed doors. No spectators. Just horses. But considering how many of them travel to reach Cheltenham, you'd would have to say the humans who travel with them could be potential carriers.

French racecourse Compiegne has announced that racing there on March 2nd and 4th will take place . . .

Only thirteen days to go until I am sending out my analysis and selections for the first day at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival.

With the rain still falling, it's impossible to imagine anything other than the word 'soft' appearing somewhere in the going conditions for Tuesday March 10th.

The meeting will begin with the Supreme Novices' Hurdle for which Shiskin is the current 5/2 favourite. Asterion Forlonge (5/1), Chantry House (9/1) and Fiddleontheroof (8/1) are among the challengers.

The first day also includes the Arkle Chase, Ultima Handicap Chase, the Champion Hurdle, the Mares' Hurdle . . .

  • It was good to see Manchester City come from behind and win their Champions League tie in Spain. Even better to see Sergio Ramos sent off for Real Madrid. The 26th time in his career that Ramos has seen red. It was a good decision by the ref. He not only saw the foul and saw that it was just outside the penalty box.

For more years than I care to recall, I have watched Ramos get away with anything short of murder when playing for Real Madrid in La Liga. He may have been sent off 26 times but . . .

  • Last weekend saw the following winning football tips:- Lyle Taylor to score anytime for Charlton at odds of 7/5.

There were wins for Cheltenham at Evens, Crewe at 1/2, Raith Rovers at 7/10, Both Teams to Score for the match between Swindon and Grimsby, at odds of 17/20. There was also a nice win via my tip for Sunderland to Win to Nil against Bristol Rovers at odds of 13/10 and I want to talk about that type of bet.

I was particularly pleased with that win because it was a way of making more . . .

2 winners from 2 tips on Friday, following on from 4 from 4 on Wednesday. Don't expect 100% returns every day!

The reliable Christ in April was an 8/1 winning NAP for in the Devon National at Exeter. Winning by eight and a half lengths and with Belle Empress in third.

Over at Warwick, Grand Roi won as expected. 4/5 was the early price. 1/2 the past the post odds.

We are at that stage of the jumps season when many of those targeted for the Cheltenham Festival have now been wrapped in cotton wool and . . .
