Firstly, thank you for all your kind messages regarding the Cheltenham Festival I was pleased so many of you followed me in on the final tip of the festival - and last of the seven winners across four days - Indefatigable (photographed below).

Some of you took the 50/1 the day before, others the 40/1 and some the 25/1 SP. Regardless of what price you took, an excellent way to end the meeting. Especially for member Ashley who made the mistake of typing £25 rather than £2.50 stake and was many quids in.
    That's why I often . . .

So that was the Cheltenham Festival. Rather good, wasn't it? Rounded off by my 50/1 or 40/1 winner of the lucky last, INDEFATIGABLE. My each way NAP for the final race of the festival. For those who read the introductions to these posts, but are then not allowed to go any further unless they are members, here is what I told those members late on Thursday afternoon.

"When Indefatigable next raced at Cheltenham, she finished second behind one of our most impressive winners this week, Dame De Compagnie. Indefatigable has raced at . . .

    MIN WINS!

Possibly the most pleasing win for me at the Cheltenham Festival so far. Nothing to do with the odds. More to do with having my research confirmed and proof that sometimes it can be OK to change your mind.

I came into this festival believing, like so many people, that A Plus Tard would win the Ryanair Chase. But then I looked deeper into the relative merits of the previous races involving that one and Min.

Lots of people backed A Plus Tard because he beat Chacun Pour Soi but, as I wrote to members yesterday . . .

Well that was some day. Just as jockeys have good days and bad, so do punters.

After being disloyal to some on Tuesday, my Wednesday policy of staying loyal to horses that had won for us already this season paid off, with one notable exception.

The day began with the expected victory by ENVOI ALLEN. Tipped ante-post when available at 5/4 or 6/5, he'd been heavily backed last night and today and came past the post a cosy winner at odds of 4/7.

CHAMP came from out of the back of . . .

Loyalty. That’s the lesson I should learn from day one of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival.

Case 1. Epatante winning a weak Champion Hurdle was a salutary reminder to me to not overthink races in which the favourite is a horse I had previously tipped and backed to win races already this season.

I have looked back at my tips for those races and my comments afterwards. While it was at that time possible that Epatante would be in the Mares’ Hurdle, the fact is that I gave subscribers a big vote of confidence about Epatante back then. So I . . .

So the time has arrived. The meeting we've all been waiting for since autumn turned into winter.

Last year we had 7 winners and 7 placed profitable punts across the four days. I was happy with that very respectable return. We've enjoyed 12 winners some years and as few as five other years. But this is the most competitive jumps racing anywhere in the world, so finding any winner should see you pat yourself on the back.

Remember, profitable punting is not simply about the first horse past the post. Far from it. You can make more profit . . .

  • Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the FA Cup after Norwich City took them to extra time and then won a penalty shoot out. Another blow to Jose Mourinho. Further proof that he's about as suited to being manager of Spurs as UK Home Secretary Priti Patel would be to manning a Samaritans helpline.

I admire the approach of the Norwich manager who, despite his team staring relegation in the face, ensured the supporters saw the Canaries give it a right go. They were positive and were rewarded with having their name in the quarter final draw. And they . . .
