  • A winning treble at odds of 9/1 and it's only the third week of the season. Thank you Fulham, Leeds and Lincoln. Always nice to know we are ahead of the bookie with football accumulators so early in the season.

Single winning bets in the English leagues included Lyle Taylor scoring for Charlton at odds of 11/5, Lincoln winning at 10/11 (NAP), a Fulham win at odds of 8/5 along with home wins for Norwich City and Sheffield United. Not bad. But, for the second time running, anything I can do Robert Ryan up in . . .

QUADRILATERAL was a 7/1 winner for members of VG Tips today. I got a nice angle on that one!

Those who took the early price about my NAP in the opening race at Newbury got the best returns. The daughter of Frankel won first time on a racecourse and came past the post at SP odds of 7/2. Once again, the early bird punters caught the most value.

At the time I am writing, SOUTHERN FRANCE also justified my faith and Ryan Moore rode a confidence boosting Group 3 winner.

The final selection of Friday has yet to . . .

It looks as though there will be plenty of horses vying for star billing at York racecourse next week.

I wish I could be at my favourite track to see the likes of Enable, Crystal Ocean, Stradivarius and Elarqam, to name just four of the stars of the flat season so far. This may well be be the last time Enable will be seen on a UK racecourse.

I've long enjoyed this meeting which culminates with the Ebor Handicap a week on Saturday. People ask why I am such a fan of York racecourse. I think I fell in . . .

  • Last weekend went very well, especially so up in Scotland where long time VG Tips member Robert Ryan contributed 5 winning tips from 5 selections for fellow subscribers to my selections service.

Rob knows his Scottish football and delivered winning bets at odds of up to 14/5 last weekend, including the surprising St Mirren win against Aberdeen.

If you're going to Ascot on Saturday, enjoy. I will not even be watching the Shergar Cup on telly. It's the Mickey Mouse Cup of racing. The equivalent of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in football. Or whatever they call that competition these days.

I have explained previously why I do like this event that was dreamt up a few years ago, but imagined as something quite different from how the meeting is now organised. Even the quality of horses racing there tomorrow is down on past years.

The Shergar Cup exists for the Public Relations people to . . .

I'd like to welcome Gill to VG Tips. He's signed up for life! Wise man. If you are going to be punting for years to come, he's bagged the bargain of them all.

As I am fond of saying, profitable punting is a marathon and not a sprint. I'm into my third decade of doing it for real. I first spent a couple of years playing with pretend money, followed by very small stakes, to learn my craft and discover where, when and on what I had the most success when it came to racing.

    Some . . .

  • As I write, the transfer window for the Premier League and Championship is closing.

It has been a  busy pre-season transfer market. Spend, spend, spend for those who can afford it. Or can they?

Harry Maguire, at £80+ million has become the most expensive defender in the world, signing for Manchester United. Across Manchester, Champions Man City have spent £60 million each on two players.

Some of the fees I have seen lower down the Premier League and Championship are, in their own, just as crazy. Some clubs have paid over the odds, for sure.

    One player staying put . . .

    Saturday went well.

Khaadem was a particularly pleasing winner. The Stewards' Cup is always a competitive race and Khaadem faced 27 opponents. But I was sufficiently onfident to make the colt a NAP. Tipped to members when available at 8/1, Khaadem won comfortably at SP odds of 4/1.

Here's what I wrote to members of VG Tips the day before racing: "Khadeem was impressive last time out despite finishing as the runner up in Class 1, Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury last month. With a clear run that day, the Jim Crowley ridden colt would . . .
