Let me first welcome Robert and Neil back to VG Tips after their time away. People come and go and that's fine. Life can get in the way of us betting and some subscribers to my service are more interested in jumps racing over winter than flat racing in the spring and summer.

I confess that this one time flat comes first punter is now resolutely far more excited by National Hunt meetings. Over recent seasons I have become increasingly concerned about the quality of flat racing. Of course, these things can be cyclical and we cannot expect to . . .

  • Whatever became of coaching footballers how to defend? It seems to be a lost art. Or one Premier League clubs have discarded (along with sending real people to scout at football games rather than relying on DVD's or statistics).

Jose Mourinho said his Spurs players were "psychologically weak" and that was the reason for their late collapse at home against West Ham. Tottenham were leading 3-0 and comfortable with twenty minutes to spare. Mourinho made a double substitution and, within minutes, West Ham had pulled done goal back. They scored three times in the final twelve minutes of . . .

It's been a strange flat season. No sooner had we enjoyed our last winner over the jumps at the Cheltenham Festival (at odds of 50/1), than racing was suspended due to the pandemic and flat racing trainers had to put their horses back in their stables and wait until June before they could get a race into them.

It very much disrupted the flat season and made a mess of the planning that goes into training racehorses and scheduling when they should race. We go some odd results in the summer as a direct consequence. Because of that . . .

On Wednesday 5/2 tip Dakota Gold and 9/4 selection The Storyteller won for us. But the one I took out of the day was a filly I opposed. That was the Sir Michael Stoute trained, Ryan Moore ridden Noon Star which won very nicely at Nottingham A daughter of the great Galileo, she won going away and has to be of interest looking forward to the Group 1 Oaks at Epsom on June 2nd 2021. After that victory today, she's now 33/1 in the ante-post market for that race.

    I was listening to Paul Nicholls . . .

Pretty Gorgeous lived up to her name today when winning the Group 1 Fillies Mile at Newmarket. A past winner for myself and subscribers, I was kicking myself for not remaining loyal to her. But when there is more than one past winner for you in any race, you have to choose and my Isabella Giles ran far too keenly in the early stages of that race and ran out of steam late on. Pretty Gorgeous was a worthy winner and is now the ante-post favourite for the 1000 Guineas om May 2nd 2021.

Saturday sees yet more races . . .

I wasn't impressed by the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. I was disappointed with how the race panned out. I am afraid that the absence of the horses from Ireland led to a lack of pace in the race. Without the quartet from the O'Brien family, the race was run at a very slow pace. That led to horses packing tight, racing on each others heels and some of them lacking room to manoeuvre.

My Raabihah was pulled out into space too late by the jockey. Once they found room, Raabihah ran on fast to finish fifth . . .

  • Seemingly it's not only the football that's gone crazy. So have I.

Further apologies for getting my dates mixed up when it comes to the busy football schedule of the coming days. Discard the previous two football tips e-mails sent to you.
Were I manager of Tottenham Hotspur, I'd be having the team turn up for games on the wrong days.

In my defence, I have been trying to work through my illness of the past three weeks which, annoyingly, comes and goes. One day I think I am back to full fitness and can once . . .
