  • My generation of football fan despairs of the increasing efforts by the wealthier clubs to get rid of FA Cup replays. Just listening to what a replay at Anfield will mean for League 1 Shrewsbury Town confirms that, for those outside the top two divisions, a Cup replay against a big club can bring in enough cash to make so many improvements. It can be a lifeline.

The top clubs, of course, would get rid of the League Cup and the FA Cup if only they could. They want more Champions League games and a Premier League reduced to 18 . . .

Third Time Lucki was the only NAP on Friday and the only winner from four races selected. There was one non runner. I did say I thought the racing was poor on Friday and I sided with Third Time Lucki (despite the stupid spelling) because I had heard Dan Skelton speak highly of his horse only a week or so ago. 11/4 was a good price about the winner who came home just under four lengths in front of a newcomer from Nicky Henderson.

Some days are like that. There is only one you really fancy and I have . . .

A busy Thursday began well at Gowran Park when Aione and Benie Des Dieux won for us. Those taking the early prices did much the best. Aione was Evens last night but won at SP of only 2/5. Benie Des Dieux, my NAP for the Class 1, Grade 2 Galmoy Hurdle, was value last night when priced 11/10 in the betting market. She won at an SP of Evens. Still value for a very, very easy win in the Irish mist.

Early bird punters also captured the value at Fakenham where my one and only tip - and the . . .

Last Saturday went well for subscribers to VG Tips.

Magic of Light, Goshen, Yala Enki, Minella Indho, Eskylane and Defi Du Seuil all won for us. While I am persoanlly never in a rush to back horses at odds on prices, I know some members are content to do so.

But for me Magic of Light (5/2), Yala Enki (2/1 NAP) and Defi Du Seuil (11/10 SP) were value odds against winners. I have written about the latter in the blog section of the website. Right now I am feeling very clever with myself for having tipped . . .

  • For more years than I can recall, I have often tipped a draw between Chelsea and Arsenal. It has paid out several times.

I tipped them to draw in midweek at odds of 3/1 and Arsenal fought back to secure a 2-2 draw despite being reduced to ten men after former Chelsea defender David Luiz was sent off.

The English midweek fixtures produced lots of goals and some crucial wins. Especially so for Premier League teams trying to avoid relegation.

Bournemouth secured a rare win. Aston Villa scored a 95th minute winner against fellow relegation candidates Watford. That . . .

  • A 16/1 winning accumulator rounded off a profitable weekend of football tips for members of VG Tips. Nottingham Forest came from behind to beat Luton Town 3-1. Forest were the fourth team in my English/Scottish accumulator. On Saturday, Rotherham, Clyde and Ayr had already won. The first winning accumulator in 2020, it won’t be the last.

Single winning bets also included Norwich winning for only the fourth time this season at odds of 6/5. The draw between Tottenham and Watford at odds of 13/5 was a nice return. Sunderland won again and this time . . .

Well, jockey Brian Hughes rode two winners at Musselburgh on Friday. Just as I confidently predicted. Only NOT the two I tipped! I could scream.

I did smack myself around the head after he won the first aboard Highway Companion at odds of 6/1. Why? Because when first looking at that race, Highway Companion was my gut instinct selection. I should have listened to the gut.

Instead, I delved into the previous form of that one and opponent Not the Chablis, which had previously beaten Highway Companion. Today Not the Chablis was pulled up two fences from home and . . .

What is left to say about Irish trainer Willie Mullins. He's brilliant. And crafty.

For the first time ever he sends a horse to race at Market Rasen in England and, what do you know? My 10/3 tip Panic Attack wins her very first race by ten lengths!

The SP odds of 5/2 were still value when you consider the margin of victory. Clearly punters were on the daughter of Canford Cliffs. I expect the bookies on course took a bit of a pounding. No idea what the attendance was but I hope the majority of the . . .

  • Watford won for members of VG Tips at odds of 9/5 last weekend. A good price for a revived team that won comfortably against fellow relegation candidates, Bournemouth.

The both teams to score betting market can be a profitable one even when the price on offer is an odds on one. Brentford versus QPR and Barnsley versus Huddersfield delivered for us on that front, each at odds of 3/4.

Doncaster Rovers won for us at odds of 31/20, Portsmouth won at odds of at 1/2 and Exeter City returned further profit when winning at odds of . . .
