Wednesday went well. True, the four winners were not available at great prices, but we punters don't get to price up the betting market. Which is a shame. Imagine the fun we'd have if we could do that!

Laurina was impressive when winning the Mares Hurdle at Punchestown. Those members who took my advice and backed the straight forecast improved their returns by placing what was then 6/1 Stormy Ireland as the runner up. That's how the race finished. Laurina now goes on to Cheltenham.

Insult was our first winner on the card at Punchestown on . . .

  • February is often a crucial month for football teams. It's always a busy one.

Those Premier League clubs left in European competitions are playing almost non stop these days. Manchester City, even with ten men, managed to fight back against Schalke and win their away Champions League tie 2-3 in midweek. Next up for City, a League Cup final at Wembley.

Manchester City really could win the League Cup, FA Cup and Premier League. Lots of people have backed that treble. Some punters have even backed them to win those titles and the Champions League. It's possible . . .

Last Saturday delivered some quality racing on both sides of the Irish Sea and there were several clues towards the Cheltenham Festival.

I will be far from alone in having changed my mind about one or two horses and one or two races for the festival, which begins three weeks from today. Part 2 of my festival preview will be sent to members in the next few days.

While we had just the four winners on the day, Paul Nicholls trained eight. An incredible achievement about which I have written here.

Today, Tuesday, Nicholls notched up the 3000th winner of . . .

  • Betting on football has never been more popular. It has also never been more unpredictable.

A team bottom of the table beating one at or near the top of the same division is no longer a rare event. Indeed, some weeks it's the norm.

Some things you can rely on. Walsall will never do what I want them to. For more years than I care to recall, Walsall win when I back them to lose, and fail to win when I support them to do so. I've said it before. I shall say it again. I give up . . .

Friday showed once again why I personally will always favour backing something at a bigger price each way, rather than back an odds on favourite.

Penny Mallow was a 7/1 winner for members of VG Tips today. A day when odds on favourites Kalashnikov and Elusive Bell were beaten into second.

Over at Fakenham, scene of that enjoyable win by Penny Mallow, my other selection at that racecourse, Brelan D'as did win at odds on SP of 8/11.

Saturday is a ludicrously busy day of racing. Much of it good quality.

What should be the approach of . . .

As I have said many times in my betting life, backing short priced odds on shots is a dangerous path for a punter to take. It's why I do so little of it.

Whenever I have seen people at racecourses back such horses with hundreds or thousands of pounds, I shake my head in dismay. So they are rich and can afford to lose it. Then hand the money over to a charity, not a bookie. Give it to your local hospice, for example. The money will be used much better there than by backing the likes of Definitly . . .

  • That was an eventful Champions League.

Manchester United not good enough to cope with a PSG side that had important players out injured. I guess I and some others underestimated how the French side would cope with the absence of Cavani and Neymar. To my eyes, they looked better off without the latter. United's defending was poor and the goals, though nicely executed, were in part due to some poor defending by Manchester United. PSG also kept a clean sheet, a rare event in the Champions League.

Tottenham did very well to beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley . . .

While I am pleased racing resumes in the UK following the equine influenza crisis, I don't think we punters should be too keen to splash the cash. I think we should let things settle a bit.

Allow trainers to get back into full planning of where their horses race and who rides them. It may be the weekend before the dust has fully settled following the disruption to racing. On Saturday, for example, we can look forward to top quality racing at Ascot.

As with my Cheltenham Festival previews (first part mailed out to members earlier today), I would . . .
