It's over for another year. The crowds have gone home. The rented monkey suits and hats have been returned to the shop. Mountains of champagne have been consumed by those who don't need to rent their outfits. Those who went to Royal Ascot on Tuesday and Wednesday got soaked. Those who went on Friday and Saturday may have wished they had taken factor 30 sun lotion to Berkshire.

  • It's time for fireworks, parking, pie & peas and to set light to a figure stuffed full of paper and straw. At least it was when I was a lad. Frankly, I have no idea what happens when November 5th falls on a Saturday in this day and age. I'm guessing people now pay money to attend official fireworks displays. Some racecourses even stage them. They have to make money how and when they can.

Before night falls on Saturday there will be racing up and down the UK. As far south as Wincanton. As far north as . . .

  • Why do I bang on about prices and potential value?

Today Dusky Legend won for us and was available at 15/8 when selected. That one came past the post at an SP of 11/8. So getting on early was the best bet.

But, up at Musselburgh, I also told you to wait to see if all 8 horses went to post before betting on Arthur's Secret, each way, at the odds of 9/1 available 24 hours ago.

That was because if only 7 raced the bookies would return each way bets about the first two only . . .

  • I am writing this on Wednesday and before racing has begun at Royal Ascot on that day. So I cannot comment on results.

Thursday consists of some big field handicaps, ideal for ambitious each way backers, and some Group class races in which the markets are led by very obvious favourites.

There is something for all betting tastes at Royal Ascot on Thursday.

The Queen will present the Gold Cup to the winner of that Group 1 race that has been given a new name in honour of her 90th birthday.

The Queen has owned the winner of the Gold . . .

  • So the rain has come for Royal Ascot and trainers are withdrawing those horses that prefer fast, rattling ground. That's a pity.

Some big names have been pulled out, or moved to races later in the week. But there is rain forecast for much of the week, so soft or good to soft going is likely to be around for most of the five day festival of top class flat racing.

Day 1 of Royal Ascot looks a cracker.
