Pinatubo dug deep to win the Grade 1 Dewhurst Stakes on Saturday and would have won by further had the race been over a mile. So I remain confident about my ante-post bet offered to members back in June for Pinatubo to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket at the end of April 2020.

Odds of 10/1 and 12/1 were on offer in June and my money went down. The most advanced case of forward planning betting I can recall. I like the fact that Pinatubo does little at home and likes to sleep a lot. That . . .

Friday offered us plenty of clues for racing on Saturday and going forward.

Quadrilateral proved she's as good as some thought by winning the Group 1 Fillies' Mile in good fashion. Love ran well but a length and a half third was as close as she could get to the winner.

Platnium Star didn't enjoy Newmarket conditions and could only finish seventh while Dream Shot was a non runner in the same race.

Limato was gallant in trying to win the same race for the third consecutive year but, in our last time out winner Mustashry, found one . . .

You know the winter jumps season is approaching when race meetings are abandoned due to racecourses being waterlogged.

It can be an inconvenience to the larger courses but can be life and death to those racecourses that have fewer meetings throughout the year. In recent days both Salisbury and Ayr have lost fixtures due to too much rain.

Looking at the forecast for Ireland and the West of the UK on Friday, we could see other meetings called off. Chepstow must be at risk if the weather forecast I have seen is accurate.

Courses in the East of England should . . .

  • So managers are losing their jobs and it's only October!

Barnsley Football Club could not find it within themselves to thank the popular with the fans Daniel Stendel for his service, most notably getting the club promoted out of League 1 last season. A fine achievement, all things considered. Officially, Stendel resigned. The brief statement from the club did not include any of the usual thanks to the outgoing manager. It was, frankly, rude and lacked class.

The form of the team has suffered after an initial promising opening game of the season when they beat Fulham. They haven . . .

I write this prior to the two Friday selections going to post.

Saturday and Sunday sees some top class racing in England and France.

The reason I shy away from the races other than the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is that they contain so many French bred horses I know much less about. Horses that do most or all of their racing in their native France and so are more experienced with French racecourses.

While some of the supporting races at Longchamp on Saturday and Sunday do include UK horses we are used to seeing, and in some . . .

Last weekend went well. Choosing the first two home in a 30 runner handicap is bound to please me and it's not as rare an event as some may think.

Indeed, perhaps I should have been placing Lord North and Beringer in a reverse or straight forecast for the ultra competitive Class 2 Cambridgeshire handicap at Newmarket. After all, long time followers of mine know how much I relish the challenge of trying to find profit in such big field races.

Lord North was 9/1 the night before racing and was heavily punted on the day. So much . . .

  • Take a bow Robert Ryan. He offered seven tips for football in Scotland last weekend - and all seven paid out. Some effort.

I have been following Robert Ryan on Twitter for a few years. I noticed how good a punter he was on football in Scotland and in England. Clearly Robert loves his football and has a keen eye when it comes to spotting value in the betting market.

So I asked him to come on board and offer his own betting selections for matches in Scotland. After all, knowledge is power and Robert is clearly knowledgeable about football across . . .
