Prior to Beringer racing at Newmarket on Thursday, one member of VG Tips messaged me to ask if he should be worried that the price about my win only tip was drifting out to odds of 4/1. Don't worry, I told him. After all, the horse doesn't know punters are fancying him less than some others, does he?

Beringer proved the doubters wrong and won for us at SP of 4/1. He was only 5/2 in the betting market the night before racing. He only won by a head but the margin of victory has . . .

  • The Champions League semi-finals have all the promise of being cracking games.

Tottenham up against the young, talented Ajax side should be an enthralling two legs. Spurs came out on top against Manchester City in an eight goal thriller in midweek and have earned their place in the semi-finals.

Liverpool against Barcelona is a semi-final to whet the appetite. I still think Liverpool could get the better of Barcelona. It's good for them that the first leg is in Spain. For all Barcelona do not appear to lose at home in the Champions League, if Liverpool . . .

Hurrah! I’ve finally seen one racing at Newmarket this week that I very much liked the look of. Even better, I tipped SKARDU at 13/2 yesterday. The William Haggas trained colt was held out the back initially but produced expertly by jockey James Doyle. I watched horse and jockey throughout the race, for clues. I liked what I saw and Skardu justified what I wrote to members on Tuesday...

"A winner on debut in a Class 4 maiden over 7 furlongs at this racecourse, the colt was staying on at the finish that day and so should . . .

I'm not sure punters learned much from the racing at Newmarket on Tuesday. That's not to dismiss some of the winners. But only the Nell Gwyn Stakes delivered a winner and runner up that could be something special looking forward to the 1000 Guineas next month.

Bookies cut the price about Qabala winning that race, from 66/1 to 6/1. I love how the betting market overreacts to one performance and that coming in April. It's hilarious. Don't get me wrong, Qabala was a very good winner and clearly handles Newmarket and will relish racing . . .

Last Saturday, at Newbury and Ayr, the sun shone and the racecourse conditions drying out. That led to a number of runners being withdrawn by their trainers, including some of my selections.

The forecast for this week is for temperatures to rise and for it to stay dry. True flat turf season weather has arrived. We will likely see racecourse clerks announce 'Good' or perhaps even 'Good to Firm' going at Newmarket. Most racecourses are watered these days so truly Firm ground is as rare as a sensible comment coming out of the loud mouth of Matt Chapman! A man . . .

It's that time of year when we straddle both the closing stages of the National Hunt season and the beginning of the flat turf season.

While it is May before I get serious about the flat racing, there are some good races at Newbury and Newmarket this month. For fans of flat racing, this is a time to watch and learn. To see which horses impress so early in a new season. Always have in mind that the real quality horses will come out to play later in Spring.

I'm still excited by the jumps season. We have . . .

  • Scottish Grand National Racing Tips April 13

I had hoped to be in Scotland this weekend and attend in person my first ever Grand National at Ayr. Sadly, life got in the way of that plan. A pity as it seems I would have enjoyed a dry day at Ayr and witnessed some fine racing in the process. I will have to make do with television, which just isn't the same as being on a racecourse.

The Scottish Grand National is the follow up act to the English one which saw Tiger Roll win for us and lots of punters last weekend. While the bookies clearly . . .

I'm not yet ready to dip my toe in the new flat turf season waters, at least not on a consistent basis.

There are simply too many unknowns about horses racing for the first time, or for the first time in many months. I don't like known unknowns!

I will look at the Newbury card for Saturday and I most certainly will be offering analysis and tips for the Newmarket meeting on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, including races such as the Nell Gwyn and Craven Stakes.

For the moment at least, my chief concentration is on . . .

  • So the midweek NAP bet paid out at odds of 21/10. Although the scoreline at Old Trafford read only 0-1 to Barcelona, it was a fairly one sided match. 21/10 was value for a Barcelona win and you would expect them to win again, this time with a bigger scoreline, in the second leg on home soil on April 16th.

The 7/2 I have mentioned more than once for Barca to win the Champions League has gone. They have now taken over favouritism in the betting market from Manchester City. The bookies have Barcelona at 5 . . .

  • The winning football tips last weekend were:- Jamie Vardy to score anytime at odds of 13/10, Leicester City to win the same game at 8/11, Doncaster Rovers at 23/20, Portsmouth at 11/10, Sunderland at 5/6, Norwich at 4/9 and the draw at 90 minutes in the FA Cup semi-final between Watford and Wolves, which paid out at odds of 23/10.

Of all clubs, it was Luton Town who let down the 11/1 four League 1 teams to win accumulator. The runaway leaders of that division had a player sent off and . . .
