The rain has arrived. More yet to come. We can kiss goodbye to Good to Firm conditions at some racecourses on Saturday, especially in Ireland and the west of the UK, including at Newbury. Rain is falling on Friday on both sides of the Iris Sea.

At the time of writing, Misty Grey, an each way NAP at odds of 13/2, was beaten three quarters of a length into second by a winner called Shadn (which should go into notebooks). Another result that proves my point about backing each way, even at odds of 13/2, unless you feel . . .

All punters have a different idea of what is a good bet. Which price represents value and which does not.

On Wednesday night two odds on selections won for members of VG Tips. In fairness, as they came past the post, they were decent value for their wins even at short odds and I feel sure some members were on.

Odds on betting is rarely for me personally. I make exceptions when I believe the odds on price should be even shorter than it is.

Some days punting is not always about backing the obvious, as Wednesday away from Yarmouth . . .

I am writing this prior to Wednesday's evening meetings taking place.

In truth there is very, very little to entice a racing punter on Thursday. We are now in that lull between Ascot and Newmarket - which went well for members of VG Tips - and Glorious Goodwood at the end of the month (at which my annual record is mixed).

Years ago I almost gave up on Goodwood in August. It is a great meeting to watch and set in glorious Sussex surroundings. But I had a run of poor results there in the last decade. Results in more recent . . .

First up, welcome to new members of VG Tips, Andy, Gerald, Tom and Stephen. I'm grateful for you joining.

Tomorrow is hardly a cracking day of racing for them to begin with but, as ever, my favourite fancies are my (NAPS).

There was a story this week that Frankie Dettori and Godolphin may have kissed and made up and that Dettori could once again ride for the so called 'Boys in Blue.' That would be some story.

There was a fallout years ago. At the time when, if we're honest, Frankie had lost the plot. His mood and . . .

On Friday we enjoyed winning with my 9/2 tip Raffle Prize.

I warned members that I was opposing our Royal Ascot winner, Daahyeh, with Raffle Prize because I believed that the Group 2 race he won last month was of better quality than the Group 3 won by Daahyeh. I don't like opposing last time out winners for us but I called that one right today. Raffle Prize is, as jockey Frankie Dettori said after a comfortable victory, "a very smart horse."

My selection service tries to offer something at prices to suit all betting tastes and those . . .

The Jamie Spencer ridden Spanish Mission got Thursday at Newmarket off to a good start by winning the first race with plenty to spare. A 15/2 tip to members on Thursday, Spanish Mission won at SP odds of 13/2.

Over the years, Jamie Spencer has been the target of keyboard warriors who have too often blamed him for them losing a bet. You see, Jamie doesn't do things the easy way. Trainers book him to produce a horse late on. As used to be the case with his friend Richard Hughes, it's all about if you . . .

Racing lost one of its more famous figures this past week. John McCririck was recognised by those who rarely watched racing. His appearance in front of camera from 1980 caught the attention of television viewers.

He was on the side of us punters and, both when in working newspapers and appearing on TV, he challenged some of the dubious practices of the big bookmaking companies. He was also keen to teach would be punters what to do and, importantly, what not to do. If you haven't already, you can read my appraisal of 'Big Mac' by Log-in Sign-up for Tips Now!

As I write, Riot has been beaten a neck but Elarqam, a 2/1 tip, has won at Sandown Park.

Racing lost one of its biggest figures today. John McCririck died at the age of 79 after an 18 month long illness. The last time I saw him he already looked poorly and it was only his devoted wife who kept him going to the races as long as he did.

While his latter days on Channel 4 racing were shaky, there can be no disputing that he had for many years made racing a much more popular sport with . . .
