What a performance by Altior on Saturday! In atrocious conditions, he won again and won a true test of his ability and stamina thanks to Ruby Walsh giving runner up Un De Sceaux a great ride.

That's what Altior needed and the best price of 4/5 should be taken ante-post for Altior to win the Champion Chase at the festival for the second year running.

The heavy rainfall at Sandown and Aintree played havoc with some horses on the day. Lalor hated the conditions but don't rule that one out from bouncing back at the festival . . .

Fired blanks in the three races selected on Friday but there was certainly one to take out of the racing today with an eye to the future.

The Paul Nicholls trained Topofthegame was left way behind when initially refusing to race at Exeter. Not his usual behaviour. That saw him 25 lengths behind the pack and yet Topofthegame managed to finish second behind the dropping in class winner, Defi Du Seuil.

Topofthegame is 8/1 to win any race at the Cheltenham Festival next March. Clearly Paul Nicholls will be trying to get to the bottom of why Topfogthegame was . . .

Unowhatimeanharry proved me right. He had not won for the last time. Pity then, that I opposed him on Friday. I was so torn to change my mind and select him to go two better than he did for me last time out, when third.

As I told members Thursday night, I suspected Unowhatimeanharry was not done with winning races. At least in that regard I was soot on. Today he won the race in which he came second a year ago.

True, we’ll never know for sure if Sam Spinner would have beaten him again as that one . . .

I am sorry to see that only three days after I e-mailed members of VG Tips with my analysis of the 23 runner Ladbrokes Trophy Chase that takes place at Newbury on Saturday, the race has now cut up to the extent of only 14 being set to go to post.

This is the former Hennessy Gold Cup, a race that always contained lots of runners and was all the more exciting and competitive for that.

14 runners is a poor turnout for such a once prestigous race. Those who run racing in the UK really need to get . . .

    WHAT A GREY DAY!

4 grey horses win 4 very good races and 2 of them for members of VG Tips. CAID DU LIN was a 16/1 (NAP) winner for me and my followers. I was so pleased with that win, not only because of the big price, but because my research into that race and belief in the horse was justified. A good spot, if I say so myself.

That was the second winner of the day for jockey Sam Twiston-Davies who also rode the grey POLITOLOGUE to victory for us. A 6/5 tip to members . . .

Three winners from five races selected on Friday. Wenyereadyfreddie was a 6/5 tip last night and won at a shorter SP price. Al Dancer was 4/5 when members were alerted and that one also came home first at a much shorter price. My NAP at Ffos Las was Penn Lane. I took the 11/4 on offer when I advised members of VG Tips and was pleased to see that one triumph at SP of 5/2. As I have said many times, the early bird punter catches the greater profit.

The one that got away, and in . . .

The Betfair Chase takes place at Haydock Park this Saturday. A race I have attended often and it always pours down when I go. The Met Office says it will not do so this year.

I have tipped the winner a few times in recent years but the race has always been on Good to Soft, Soft or Heavy going. It looks like this weekend we could have that rare beast at Haydock, actual good ground. Unless the Clerk of the Course decides to put shed loads of water on the course, we may be having to look . . .

Midweek racing ain't what it used to be, that's for sure.

Tuesday's were always terrible when it came to quality but, in more recent times, Wednesday and Thursday are not days to get too excited about when it comes to punting (unless there is a top class festival taking place).

Tomorrow is all about speculation. There are some decent meetings at Chepstow, Warwick and Hexham but in so many races horses are returning to racing for the first time this season, or racing in the UK for the first time, or racing for new stables or going . . .

At the time of writing on Saturday, four races have taken place at Cheltenham.

The BetVictor Gold Cup was an incident packed race. Only six finished. Lots of hard luck stories including Rather Be, eho was going well when brought down by another faller - one of many who came to earth in the race. Here’s hoping they are all well.

Earlier in the day, Cracker Factory, a 7/1 each way tip, finished second so ensuring you got your stake back plus a little profit.

The second selection of the day was also a runner up. But, at 8 . . .
