It was two winners and two seconds on Wednesday. A day for those who don’t mind backing shorties.

My own mind has already turned to the English and Scottish Grand Nationals, staged within the first twelve days of April. I already have my fancies.

Personally speaking I am clinging on to the jumps season as long as I possibly can. I know the official flat season is almost upon us but, for me at least, it only gets serious in May.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this past jumps season and it ain’t over yet.

    Saturday

Coming down off the high of the Cheltenham Festival leads to terrible withdrawal symptoms for us top class racing addicts.

It was 6 winners and some profitable each way placed punts for me this year. I am writing a review of the winners, losers and the ones that got away and that review will be mailed to members of VG Tips soon.

It was a good festival and, as predicted, a much more open one than last year. The bookies had the best of the final day but punters hammered them on terrific Thursday when we had three winners and . . .

The man of Carlow has done it. At last! Willie Mullins, the finest trainer in Ireland, has finally trained the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

I recall jockey Ruby Walsh giving a big up for Al Boum Photo when speaking to a festival preview meeting a couple of weeks ago. He said he might choose to ride that one of the handful of Mullins contenders. I bet he is wishing he had chosen that one as I am wishing I had listened closer to what he was saying.

Al Boum Photo was a very deserving winner. He went well . . .

What a day! Thursday was a great advert for racing. The best of the sport was on show as Bryony Frost became the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 race at the festival - a 15/2 winning tip from me to members of VG Tips.

If you have not watched that race, or the post race interview with Bryony, do so. I have been saying for months that she is the best advert possible for a sport that too often self inflicts damage. She is a breath of fresh air when interviewed and, as Thursday proved, a very . . .

Tiger Roll. What a horse! A 12/1 winner for me and members of VG Tips at the Aintree Grand National last year, he was my ante-post NAP for the festival as alerted to existing members back in February. The price available the night before racing - as alerted to subscribers to my selections service - was great value at 11/8 with a couple of bookies.

What a performance that was today when he won the stamina sapping Cross Country race in such fine style. He absolutely romped home in a race that exhausts most horses. Not this one. The . . .

I've said this more than once over the Cheltenham years.

Is there any point opposing anything trained by Willie Mullins? Some years, you have to say not.

The master of Irish racing was at it again on Tuesday. He trained a rare Irish winner of the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, the very impressive Klassical Dream.

Then followed up that with another easy victory in the Arkle, this time via the grey Duc Des Genievres.

I don't know how Mullins does it, but this man spends all year long preparing horses for the Cheltenham Festival and once again he delivered . . .

As is always the way, bookies are offering a multitude of special offers throughout the Cheltenham Festival.

For example, Paddy Power are offering your stake back as what they call a 'free bet' if your horse finishes second, third or fourth in any race on the first day of the festival. Maximum stake permitted is £10 or 10 Euros.

William Hill are offering returns on each way bets for the first 7 horses past the post in the very first race of the festival.

Always worth checking the Terms & Conditions for any specials you see on offer during the . . .

Never a better time to join VG Tips than just before the Cheltenham Festival. Last year went very well.

So please allow me to welcome those joining for the first time, along with a few who have come back to VG Tips. Everyone is welcome to take up residency at my home for profitable punters, except unrealistic moaners. I don't tend to attract those people any longer.

What pleases me most is how realistic, communicative and appreciative those who sign up to VG Tips are.

I value my members whether they have been with me for several years, weeks . . .

Christopher Wood maintained his unbeaten record for us today and provided another winner for Somerset based trainer, Paul Nicholls. His Manor Farm stable is in great form just in time for the Cheltenham Festival.

There is no way of telling why certain stables hit good form at any one time. It's not as though the horses talk to each other from their stables and say: "Hey, are we up for it this month? Shall we give the boss a few winners."

But while any trainer does have his horses in good form, it's always worth sticking with them . . .

Imagine being a heavy odds on backer at Musselburgh today, only to see 1/2 favourite Constancio run off the racecourse at the fourth fence. Painful. I guess the favourite wasn't in the mood to race and just fancied buggering off back home.

You see, just like us humans, some horses don't fancy going to work some days. They are not, contrary to the belief of some punters, machines. Horses have feelings and emotions too. They can be moody, just like us. Constancio didn't care a jot that he was odds on favourite. He packed it in . . .
