Let me first welcome Robert and Neil back to VG Tips after their time away. People come and go and that's fine. Life can get in the way of us betting and some subscribers to my service are more interested in jumps racing over winter than flat racing in the spring and summer.

I confess that this one time flat comes first punter is now resolutely far more excited by National Hunt meetings. Over recent seasons I have become increasingly concerned about the quality of flat racing. Of course, these things can be cyclical and we cannot expect to . . .

It's been a strange flat season. No sooner had we enjoyed our last winner over the jumps at the Cheltenham Festival (at odds of 50/1), than racing was suspended due to the pandemic and flat racing trainers had to put their horses back in their stables and wait until June before they could get a race into them.

It very much disrupted the flat season and made a mess of the planning that goes into training racehorses and scheduling when they should race. We go some odd results in the summer as a direct consequence. Because of that . . .

On Wednesday 5/2 tip Dakota Gold and 9/4 selection The Storyteller won for us. But the one I took out of the day was a filly I opposed. That was the Sir Michael Stoute trained, Ryan Moore ridden Noon Star which won very nicely at Nottingham A daughter of the great Galileo, she won going away and has to be of interest looking forward to the Group 1 Oaks at Epsom on June 2nd 2021. After that victory today, she's now 33/1 in the ante-post market for that race.

    I was listening to Paul Nicholls . . .

Pretty Gorgeous lived up to her name today when winning the Group 1 Fillies Mile at Newmarket. A past winner for myself and subscribers, I was kicking myself for not remaining loyal to her. But when there is more than one past winner for you in any race, you have to choose and my Isabella Giles ran far too keenly in the early stages of that race and ran out of steam late on. Pretty Gorgeous was a worthy winner and is now the ante-post favourite for the 1000 Guineas om May 2nd 2021.

Saturday sees yet more races . . .

I wasn't impressed by the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. I was disappointed with how the race panned out. I am afraid that the absence of the horses from Ireland led to a lack of pace in the race. Without the quartet from the O'Brien family, the race was run at a very slow pace. That led to horses packing tight, racing on each others heels and some of them lacking room to manoeuvre.

My Raabihah was pulled out into space too late by the jockey. Once they found room, Raabihah ran on fast to finish fifth . . .

Some punters follow French racing much closer than I do. Frankly, there's plenty of racing taking place in the UK on all but fewer than a handful of days each year to occupy my mind.

I am sometimes asked why I so rarely offer tips for racing in France. Races in which UK trainers send over the odd runner because prize money is superior across the channel. It is because of unknowns. Racing packed full of French bred and trained horses are not for me because I know so little about those horses and how good their form when . . .

September was fairly rubbish for me. Both on the betting and health front. The latter being far more important than the former, even to this seasoned punter.

So it was nice to begin October with 4 winners from 4 tips on Friday. A 100% record on the day.

TYSON FURY at generous odds of 4/1 was the last of the quartet to win. The day began well when 5/2 Ascot selection PIRANESI triumphed. Squeezed between those two, 4/7 tip BERKSHIRE ROCCO won at SP odds of 1/2 and my first . . .

All eyes are on France for the weekend. The Prix de 'l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday looks like being a cracker run on heavy going. Today's news was that trainer Aidan O'Brien has withdrawn Love due to the soft/heavy ground which will not improve with yet further rain to fall on Paris. That has led to the price about Enable shortening as favourite. Can the mare create history and win the race for a record third time? We shall see.

But on paper at least, it's no one horse race. Far from it . . .

I am sending out Saturday's selections just after my first on Friday has raced. And won! ISABELLA GILES, a 2/1 tip, won the Rockfel Stakes in good fashion and with something to spare. She could be winning a big race for fillies next season. Have her in your notebook or tracker.

I did watch the race in which I didn't offer a tip. A race reduced to four runners and one that Alpinista would have won had the jockey not gone for a gap, got blocked out of it, and the filly caught heels in . . .

LOST IN SPACE (a 5/2 NAP) and the well backed on the day LA BAROSSA were the winners on Thursday.

Toromona and Spirit of Bermuda were beaten into second while the final selection, First Winter, was very disappointing at Newmarket.

I will cut to the chase because valued subscriber Bob lives in Thailand where the time difference is six or seven hours ahead. He often finds himself receiving them at midnight his time and getting up to read my analysis at 6am. That's dedication Bob!

I am also getting on with it because today . . .
