It's always nice to begin a day of betting with a winner.

Smokey Bear did that for us at Newbury when justifying my confidence at odds of 9/4. As I mentioned to subscribers to VG Tips last night, Smokey Bear had previously finished second in a race that had thrown up subsequent handicap winners. So the clues were there.

It was third time lucky for Tabarrak. Hurrah! My patience with the two time runner up paid off, albeit the best price available was . . .

MORISCO got Thursday off to a wining start for members of VG Tips. My 6/4 tip was dropping in Class of race and won the opening race at Ayr with something to spare. But, did you see the fast finishing 9/1 each way newcomer Salamanca School? Put that Mark Johnston colt in your notebook. I was hopeful of a good run and subscribers who prefer to back horses each way got some profit when Salamanca School fairly steamed home into third. That one will want to race over further next time out and I . . .

What a fabulous couple of days of racing we witnessed last weekend.

The sun shone down on Leopardstown on Saturday. The rain poured down on the Curragh on Sunday. Regardless of the weather, the Irish racing crowd enjoyed the two meetings in Dublin. Each offered quality racing and, for members of VG Tips, some tasty returns.

You can read all about it in detail here https://vgtips.co.uk/weekend-of-vgtips-winners-and-wonderful-racing/

    In summary, I enjoyed the . . .

The best horses won the feature races in England and Ireland on Saturday. Favourite backers were happy.

Logician won very nicely. It was a long way from being a quality St Leger at Doncaster but Logician was a class apart from the opposition and gave Frankie Dettori his 15th Group 1 winner in the past summer alone. Extraordinary. Frankie has just got better and better and please don't tell me he only wins because he's on the best horses. There's many a jockey that would not have won some of those races were they on the same . . .

Friday began well when, as I suggested to members, Breathalyze had the beating of Cognac. 7/4 was an even better winning price than the odds on offer the night before. Always nice when that happens.

Stradivarius had an even easier win than anticipated when chief rival Dee Ex Bee was withdrawn from the Group 2 Doncaster Cup Stakes due to the ever drying ground. A comfortable victory meant Stradivarius secured the stayers' triple crown of race wins this season. He's a beauty!

Alligator Alley got wound up in the stalls prior to the start of the Flying Childer . . .

At the time of writing, Enbihaar was a winning NAP. Selected when available to members at odds of 11/8, Enbihaar came out on top in a hard fought finish to the Class 1, Group 2 Park Hill Stakes and won at an SP price of 6/5.

The 7/1 each way selection for the following race, a competitive handicap, was Repartee. That one finished second behind Kings Lynn, a good looking winner owned by the Queen.

Good Birthday was a non runner, leaving the 4.55 race open for the mentioned in dispatches Davydenko to win.

    Two withdrawals . . .

Last Saturday saw newcomer Cherokee Trail, a 4/1 tip to members of VG Tips, win at Ascot. I highlighted that winner purely based on pedigree. I am a great believer in breeding. If you have little or no form to go on, pedigree matters. As I told subscribers to my selection service, Cherokee Trail is a son of War Front and his mother, Moth, was third in the Group 1, 1000 Guineas and fourth in the Group 1 Oaks. So this newcomer winning a Class 4 Novice Stakes was a good bet.

    7/1 tip Hello Youmzain won the . . .

Only two second place finishers at Ascot on Friday and two flops at Haydock. The first time I’ve fired blanks on consecutive days for a long time.

Am I dejected? No. You have to possess the right mindset when punting. To know and be able to accept that they won’t all go in and that there will be bad days, be those of near misses or horses that are disappointing on the day. It happens.

You pick yourself up, dust yourself off and go again. As do I for tomorrow. [restrict paid="true"

No fairytale for Gordon Lord Byron in the race named after him at Haydock. The old boy finished well down the field.

That race was won by one that has let me down in the past, Qaysar. Trained by Richard Hannon, who also trained the winner of the feature race at Salisbury. A race I stayed clear of.

I probably should have stayed clear of all the racing on Thursday. 4 selections failed to deliver with the only NAP, Sinjaari, beaten into second by one I highlighted as the danger, Epaulement.

I’m hoping for better returns tomorrow.

NAPS don’t always win. When deciding which are my favourite bets of any racing day, it is often tricky to pick one or two I favour the most. Some days they deliver. Other days, they don’t but other selections do. It is the tipping law of sod.

But, conditions permitting, my 9/1 NAP Judicial was a confident NAP for the Beverley Bullet race last Saturday. I told members to watch out for the weather and at least one member, Jamie, waited to see if the Met Office forecast for a deluge of rain was correct. It wasn . . .
