  • The winning midweek tips were Leciester City to win to nil at odds of 11/8. Jamie Vardy to score anytime for them at odds of 4/6. Both teams to score in the match between Chelsea and Aston Villa at 4/5 and a win for Wolves at odds of 4/5.

I didn't see Liverpool beating Everton 5-2 in the Merseyside derby. So often over the years, this clash of the teams on opposite sides of Stanley Park has resulted in a low scoring game. But Everton are so bad now that Liverpool went through them . . .

  • It's that time of the season. The time clubs choose to sack their managers. At the time of writing, Unai Emery has gone from Arsenal and Quique Sanchez Flores has been shown the exit door at Watford, for the second time.

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that the problem with underachieving football clubs may be higher up the pay scale? The owners. The players.  Earlier this week I heard football journalist John Cross allege that Emery was "a terrible choice" by Arsenal. I would actually say that Arsenal was a terrible choice by Emery. A coach who achieved . . .

  • Some weeks betting on the outcome of football matches is all about the obvious ones. The teams you can reasonably expect to win. Home bankers, perhaps.
There was a time when you could rely on certain teams to deliver for you and in certain leagues being predictable. Neither is assured these days.

On the back of my 20/1 winning accumulator of last weekend, the midweek football results sprung a surprise or two. What I call ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ (so named after a television show many of you will be too young to remember).

    I cannot explain what has . . .

  • WAHAY!

A 20/1 winning football accumulator pays out for myself and several of my lovely football loving members of VG Tips. I offered five teams to win last weekend. They all did. Liverpool, Leeds, Wycombe, Northampton and Swindon.

A nice win for us all and proof once again that patience is a virtue for football accumulator punters. We’ve had some near misses already this season. A 20/1 winning acca makes the wait worthwhile. I'd like to thank Matt Pearson of Luton Town who was credited with a 90th minute own goal that . . .

  • Thank goodness all that Euro 2020 qualifying nonsense is over with for a while.

Not that I didn't make money from two of the three odds against betting tips offered to my followers. I did. Italy won away from home at odds of 13/10 and Poland did the business in Israel at odds of 31/20. Only Ukraine let the side down by drawing 2-2.

As for the ambitious thirteen teams to win Euro 2020 acca, that bet was done for before Ukraine drew away to Serbia courtesy of Andorra choosing their Thursday night fixture in Albania . . .

  • Racing goes ahead at Cheltenham on Saturday. Friday was lost to a waterlogged track but plenty of hard work by the Clerk of the Course and his staff have ensured that only minor alterations have been made to the obstacles for Saturday and Sunday.

Trainers need this meeting to go ahead and get a run into their better horses as prep for the Cheltenham Festival next March. It's also needed for us punters to get a look at those who are likely to be aimed at bigger races later in the season, not only at Cheltenham.

    Watching the racing . . .

  • In this world of podcasts coming out weekly, there is one all football supporters should listen to. The Price of Football was the brainchild of Kieran Maquire. A Brighton fan but, more importantly, a man who studies the accounts of all football clubs worldwide. He delves deep into the figures and reveals which clubs are spending wisely, and which are not.

If you care about football beyond who scores the winning goal for your team, follow Kieran on Twitter and subscribe to The Price of Football podcast. It's relatively new so you can catch up from episode one and . . .

  • Domestic action in the top leagues takes a back seat again over the next few days as it's once again time for the Euro 2020 qualifying games.

The home nations all have important matches over the coming days. Wales, Scotland and England will all be seeking to do well. England manager Gareth Southgate has been criticised by some for dropping Raheem Sterling from the England squad to play Montenegro on Thursday.

It seems the Manchester City striker was involved in a dust up with Joe Gomez at the England training ground. A continuation of a dispute they had when . . .

  • Valued member of VG Tips Jamie has, like me, been cursing the odd result of late. A Barnsley equaliser deep into injury time last weekend prevented us being paid out on a Bristol City win. Then, only last night, Manchester City failed to win their second meeting with Atalanta, so bringing down my football accumulator that was otherwise going well.

As mentioned in my preview write up earlier in the week, there was always a chance Pep Guardiola would send a weakened squad to Italy. Having said that, on paper at least, the Manchester City team that began that game . . .

  • If I hear another debate about VAR I will not be responsible for my actions. I am sick of seeing it. Weary of hearing about it. Only last week I wrote about this on the VG Tips website (where all opinion content is free for anyone to read). What happens last weekend? More VAR controversy.

A player is about to be shown a yellow card for a fairly ordinary foul, a tackle from behind. The ref sees the horrific injury to the fouled player . . .
