  • February is often a crucial month for football teams. It's always a busy one.

Those Premier League clubs left in European competitions are playing almost non stop these days. Manchester City, even with ten men, managed to fight back against Schalke and win their away Champions League tie 2-3 in midweek. Next up for City, a League Cup final at Wembley.

Manchester City really could win the League Cup, FA Cup and Premier League. Lots of people have backed that treble. Some punters have even backed them to win those titles and the Champions League. It's possible . . .

  • Betting on football has never been more popular. It has also never been more unpredictable.

A team bottom of the table beating one at or near the top of the same division is no longer a rare event. Indeed, some weeks it's the norm.

Some things you can rely on. Walsall will never do what I want them to. For more years than I care to recall, Walsall win when I back them to lose, and fail to win when I support them to do so. I've said it before. I shall say it again. I give up . . .

  • That was an eventful Champions League.

Manchester United not good enough to cope with a PSG side that had important players out injured. I guess I and some others underestimated how the French side would cope with the absence of Cavani and Neymar. To my eyes, they looked better off without the latter. United's defending was poor and the goals, though nicely executed, were in part due to some poor defending by Manchester United. PSG also kept a clean sheet, a rare event in the Champions League.

Tottenham did very well to beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley . . .

  • Last weekend we enjoyed wins by Grimsby Town at odds of 12/5, Norwich to Win to Nil at odds of 23/20, along with wins for Barnsley at 3/4, Manchester United at 7/10, Arsenal at 8/13 and Both Teams To Score in the match between Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough at odds of 4/6.

Manchester City thrashed Chelsea 6-0 on Sunday and you'd have to think the Chelsea manager will be gone in the summer, along with star player Eden Hazard. Only 6 days ago I reminded members of VG Tips that you could . . .

  • Here we are at the beginning of February and the transfer window has closed. It wasn't a busy one but may have been significant for a handful of clubs. Those that needed to strengthen their squad to prevent relegation and those clubs that want to secure automatic promotion or make the play offs.

Crystal Palace made a good acquisition taking Michy Batshuayi on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season. The player wanted to go to Spurs but there was no way Chelsea were going to permit that, not with them and Spurs chasing what is now . . .

  • The past weekend went well for myself and members of VG Tips.

    7 winners from 10 selections.

Wins for Manchester United at 21/20, Grimsby 2/1, Luton 13/10 (NAP), Sheffield Wednesday 9/5, Wolves 23/10, Sheffield United 4/11 and both teams to score Norwich v Leeds at odds of 4/6.

The lack of one goal by Aston Villa scuppered the four teams to win accumulator but because I placed that bet with Paddy Power, I get the chance to go again. And I do!

    I'm getting in early for this week's football tips . . .

  • We had a good last weekend and midweek at VG Tips. The five teams to win accumulator paid out at odds of 8/1. The bet combined weekend wins for Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Barnsley with a midweek win by Arsenal. Hooray!

We began the season with a 35/1 winning accumulator and have suffered some near misses in recent weeks. I'm glad that one paid off and I'm hopeful for my own 13/1, four teams to win accumulator this weekend.

The most recent winning single bet was the draw between Crystal Palace and Southampton . . .

  • Who’d be a football manager? A lot of people, it seems.

There is never a shortage of applicants for vacant roles as Head Coach or team Manager. Yet the job can drive men a little crazy.

The Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri lost his cool last weekend, claiming his players were hard to motivate. Even the usually mild mannered Chris Hughton was in trouble with the authorities for criticising referees.

Football is taken far too seriously these days, especially by those in the game and those who cover it. As the plane tragedy that saw a talented 28 year old . . .

  • Wins last weekend by Southampton at 3/1, and Swansea at 2/1, were most welcome on what was a day of surprising results.

Some managers leave nothing to chance and Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa confirmed this week that he has "spied" on every opposing team prior to Leeds playing them this season. This brought about some truly ludicrous media coverage and mock outrage from the likes of Paul Ince and Dean Saunders. Based on their record in management, I would suggest Bielsa has forgotten more about how to be a successful coach than those two gents will ever know . . .

  • The winning tips last weekend included:- Doncaster Rovers at 7/2, Accrington Stanley at 13/8, Brentford at 8/15 and both teams to score in the matches between QPR and Leeds United and Charlton v Sunderland.

Managerial changes can make a difference when it comes to betting on football clubs to win games in the immediate aftermath of a change of team coach.

As I write, Stoke City have appointed Nathan Jones as their new manager. Jones leaves Luton Town to take up the role in the Championship.

Luton were promoted from League 2 to League 1 last season . . .
