  • Midweek racing these days is rarely attractive. Outside of the big feature meetings, there can be little to entice you to go racing.

Big field handicaps are also fewer in number than they once were. So, when you come across a Wednesday that includes some larger field, competitive looking handicaps, I sit up and take notice.

At Newbury on Wednesday, the two align and so I have taken time to look at the racecards this midweek, notably at Newbury.

    Wednesday

    Newbury

17 go to post for a Class 4 maiden hurdle but, sadly, bookies will only return each . . .

  • Revenge is a dish best served cold, so it is often said.

And two winners at Newbury certainly exacted revenge upon opponents that had previously beaten them.

24 hours ago I was tempted to stay loyal to Clan des Obeaux but there was not statistical reason why that Paul Nicholls runner should reverse form with Protex Des Flos, which beat Clan des Obeaux at Cheltenham last January.

But, of course, there is no better trainer at improving a horse than Nicholls and Clan des Obeaux won easily. Too easily for the trainers liking.

Twelve days ago, Behind Time beat Solomn . . .

  • It's day one of the two day Hennessy Gold Cup meeting at Newbury.

I am attending the meeting and looking forward to seeing in action some of the best national hunt horses around at the moment.

There will be a mixture of experienced thoroughbreds whose best days may be behind them, and some younger legs whose best days are to come.

This meeting is when the jumps trainers like Nicholls, Hobbs, Henderson, Fry, Tizzard and Skelton get serious about taking on each other via their best horses.

  • This time next week I will already be studying form for the first day of a very good meeting that begins at Prestbury Park, Cheltenham, on Friday November 11th.

Then, at the end of the month, comes the Hennessy Gold Cup meeting at Newbury, beginning on Friday November 25th. I will be attending that two day meeting and I am looking forward to it greatly.

But prior to that we have lesser race meetings such as those on offer on Thursday. At Newbury, the poor meeting kicks off with a three horse race. Later on the card there is even . . .

  • Value, value, value. It's all about value. How often do I have to say it? Today we won via one Paul Nicholls winner, El Bandit at 13/8, but it was the winner from the same stable in the next race that represented great value.

On Thursday night the price about Marracudja was so short that I did not bother tipping this former winner for us to win again. Perhaps I should have for, incredibly, the price drifted out to as big as 3/1 on the day. A baffling price. A value price and a great one if . . .
