  • Vroum Vroum Mag won well on Wednesday and the early price of Evens was value.

But Djakadam was flat out and could only manage third in the race won by Outlander. A result that surprised many, especially as Don Poli finished ahead of Djakadam in second. But I am not too concerned about the outcome as it applies to the chances of Djakadam winning a big race at the Cheltenham Festival next March. Indeed, the odds for that to happen improved as a result of the race today.

There's more top quality racing in Ireland on Thursday and a . . .

  • Value winners come at all prices. My each way NAP of the day, Shantou Bob, won at SP odds of 10/1. A great price. Shantou Bobws held up in the rear for much of the race but delivered perfectly by jockey Gavin Sheehan to land the spoils for trainer Warren Greatrex and the loyal members of VG Tips.

Defi Du Seuil won with something to spare at SP odds of 4/5, but if you got on when I suggested you could . . .

  • So there you have it. The King George VI is over with for another year and a new star is born. If, that is, a 9 year old can be classed as being born.

We won today on Thistlecrack at odds of 6/4. That turned out to be value. The horse has proved conclusively that he is a chaser with a bright future when winning the King George VI at Kempton on Boxing Day. Do not underestimate that victory. It is rare for a novice to win such a big race. He'd only raced over the larger obstacles . . .

  • One of the best things about Christmas Day coming to an end is the knowledge that the following day delivers us racing fans a sackful of superb racing.

Be that on turf at Kempton Park, or across the Irish Sea at Leopardstown, this is when the jumps season really takes off. We get to see the very best thoroughbred National Hunt horses in action.

It's St Stephens Day in Ireland and, take it from this son of a Dubliner, there is no better way to spend December 26th in Ireland than to go racing at Leopardstown. You will be . . .

  • Before the jumps season began, Paul Nicholls predicted that his one time assistant Dan Skelton would very soon become champion jockey. That's how highly the master rates his former apprentice.

Those two could dominate proceedings this season but Skelton would be the first to admit he has a way to go before he can compete with the quantity of horses the likes of Nicholls and Nicky Henderson are asked to train.

Paul Nicholls is the best in the business and has working for him a talented and dedicated team. On Friday we won via his Cliffs of Dover, which . . .

  • Is losing a race by a head better or worse than losing by a mile?

I hate losing a bet by a slender margin. On Thursday night the Sir Michael Stoute trained Honorina (my 5/4 Nap) was beaten by a head. I was gutted. I expect Stoute was more disappointed and I'm not sure where he goes with that one next. But I shall be watching out for the next run.

As punters we also win races by small margins, so we have to take the rough with the smooth.

This weekend we have some of the final . . .

  • Why is pedigree so important? That's what I am often asked. Why do I constantly mention how well bred certain horses are?

It's because pedigree is vital when assessing how well a young horse may do. It is by no means guaranteed that a colt or filly will prove to be every bit as good as one or both of his or her parents. After all, my mum had four boys and only one turned out to be Group class!

But the great Frankel (some say the greatest) has left his mark on racing. Already this flat season . . .
