  • Who takes your penalties was so simple back in the day. At Chelsea, for example. Up would step Frank Lampard and the only shock would be if he didn't find the back of the net from the penalty spot. He almost always did. Likewise James Milner at Liverpool.

Going further back in time, you could rest assured that Bobby Charlton would score penalties for Manchester United while Francis Lee would, when fit to play, take the responsibility at Manchester City.

Now, at some clubs, it's as though we are back in the playground at school. Players squabble with . . .

  • Last weekend saw both teams to score bets pay out in the games between Wolves and Chelsea at odds of 4/5 and QPR against Luton Town at odds of 8/13.

There were also winning tips for VG Tips members via my selections for Sunderland to win at odds of 23/20, Leeds to win at Barnsley at 4/7 and for Bristol City to heap more misery on Stoke with victory at a very nice price of 13/5.

In Scotland, Roebrt Ryan selected both teams to score for the Friday night game between Arbroath and Partick Thistle . . .

  • We're not going to retire on the returns - at least I'm not - but I was happy that the 'dirty dozen' 12 teams to win Euro 2020 International accumulator paid out. Two members of VG Tips found a best price of 3.7/1. I got a little less than that as I am persona non grata with the bookie Peter and Alun were able to bet with.

After all these years of profitable punting, my online bookie options are very much reduced from the old days. Only two still welcome my business on a regular basis, largely thanks . . .

  • Last weekend saw Leicester win for us once again, this time at odds of 3/4. Leicester City under Brendan Rodgers look set to finish in the top six come May while their opponents last weekend, Bournemouth, are going to struggle.

The Under 2.5 goals bet for the match between Newcastle and Watford paid out after the two dismal sides drew 1-1. I would not be surprised should both those clubs be relegated come the end of the season.

Man City to score over 1.5 goals in the first half of their match against Brighton also delivered . . .

  • This weekend will be a terrible one for the faithful fans who followed Bury FC for decades. Imagine going into a weekend of football and the name of the club you support not being there on the list of fixtures. Not hearing their result read out. Simply not being able to go to a game after a working week.

Bury is not the first football team to suffer extinction in my lifetime and, depending on how long I am around, it likely will not be the last. A shameful turn of events and an unfit for office English Football League . . .

  • Two of the three sides promoted to the Premier League last season won their first home games back in the top flight. I had fancied all three to do that last weekend, but Aston Villa let me down.

Norwich City swept aside an impotent Newcastle team and Sheffield United did what I expected them to do this season, prove those critics who are ignorant of their playing style so very wrong.

As I said in my pre-season predictions analysis, the promoted teams often stay up in the first season back. The opponents don't know what they're facing . . .

  • A winning treble at odds of 9/1 and it's only the third week of the season. Thank you Fulham, Leeds and Lincoln. Always nice to know we are ahead of the bookie with football accumulators so early in the season.

Single winning bets in the English leagues included Lyle Taylor scoring for Charlton at odds of 11/5, Lincoln winning at 10/11 (NAP), a Fulham win at odds of 8/5 along with home wins for Norwich City and Sheffield United. Not bad. But, for the second time running, anything I can do Robert Ryan up in . . .

  • As I write, the transfer window for the Premier League and Championship is closing.

It has been a  busy pre-season transfer market. Spend, spend, spend for those who can afford it. Or can they?

Harry Maguire, at £80+ million has become the most expensive defender in the world, signing for Manchester United. Across Manchester, Champions Man City have spent £60 million each on two players.

Some of the fees I have seen lower down the Premier League and Championship are, in their own, just as crazy. Some clubs have paid over the odds, for sure.

    One player staying put . . .
