  • Racing. Derby Preview and Tips

    By on 1st July 2020

16 horses are due to to go post for the Derby at 4.55pm on Saturday 4th of July. Gone are those glorious days when the race took place on the first Wednesday of the month. Being a traditionalist, I would still rather the Derby was midweek.

But here we are. The 4th of July is independence day in the USA and has been deliberately chosen as the day the pubs of England will open once more. Imagine how drunk some people will be by the time this race goes off. They will be in the boozers, placing bets via . . .

  • And so it is that we arrive at the final day of the Cheltenham Festival. There's no hiding it, this has been the toughest four day festival for punters for many a year.

We cannot be surprised at that fact. While we were pleased that some of the hot favourites never made it to the course, so making the races much more open and competitive, that also meant finding winners would be more challenging. And so it has proved. I've found this festival to be the toughest for six years.

Even in years when I've 'only' had . . .

  • Did you see Might Bite win for us at 4/1? If not, I will not spoil things for you. Go find a recording of the race, especially the finish. It's hilarious. My heart rate increased somewhat.

The sun beat down on Ladies' Day at Cheltenham, which was good to see. But, and I am furious about this, they are watering the racecourse overnight tonight. This habit of watering without needing to annoys trainers whose horses prefer Good ground. Racecourses should only be watered if the ground is so firm that it is dangerous to horses.

    That is not . . .

  • Well that was a strange day. A very long time since I fired blanks on one day at the Cheltenham Festival.

A hard luck story or two for sure. Charbel falling two from home when in front of Altior. Ballyandy meeting more traffic than most BMW drivers do on the M25.

Apple's Jade doing what she loves to do to me. That is winning when I don't back her, and coming second when my money is down on her. She beat off both Vroum Vroum Mag and Limini to ensure trainer Gordon Elliott had a very good day . . .

  • So here we are, day one of the mighty Cheltenham Festival and the forecast for the UK is for a largely dry week. That will suit some of my ante-post bets (some of which were placed as long ago as April 2016!)

Ground on the soft side of Good will be to the liking of many trainers. They will be praying the course is not watered. It shouldn't be. If we have proper ground, leave it be. Racecourses should only ever be watered if the ground is so firm as to be potentially dangerous to the horses.

    Betting . . .

  • One of the best things about Christmas Day coming to an end is the knowledge that the following day delivers us racing fans a sackful of superb racing.

Be that on turf at Kempton Park, or across the Irish Sea at Leopardstown, this is when the jumps season really takes off. We get to see the very best thoroughbred National Hunt horses in action.

It's St Stephens Day in Ireland and, take it from this son of a Dubliner, there is no better way to spend December 26th in Ireland than to go racing at Leopardstown. You will be . . .

  • I always did have a soft spot for Eartha Kitt! A singer, for those of you not old enough to have spent Saturday nights watching her on television. But, more importantly, a 10/3 winner for us and trainer Tom Dascombe today.

And Materialist performed well first time on a racecourse, beaten into second but returning each way profit at 9/1.

Only two races selected on Friday, but we returned profit in each.

Saturday is all about Champions Day at Ascot. The fixture has grown in strength and depth the past few years and on Saturday the cream of . . .

  • It was 1980 that I first attended the prestigous Ebor meeting on the beautiful Knavesmire racecourse at York. It remains my favourite course for flat racing.

The 2016 Ebor meeting begins on Wednesday. At a time when trainers and owners are ever more choosy about where they send their horses, it is a credit to those who run York that so many top class horses are booked to appear at the course between Wednesday and Saturday.

I shall have selections for each day of the meeting, beginning on Wednesday.
