  • Cheltenham Festival 2021. To ‘win any race’advice and selections

    By on 31st March 2020

Do you believe in forward planning? Are you the most patient of punters? If so, then read on.

I am not a regular ante-post punter. Most of you know that by now. Not because I don't have the patience to wait for a bet to pay out (I'm still hopeful Pinatubo will get a chance to win the 2000 Guineas for me at odds of 10/1, albeit probably not at the start of May).

But some ante-post tips paid out for us at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival. None of those bets were placed a year . . .

    Hello there good people.

Racing in Ireland has been suspended from midnight Tuesday until at least April 19th

So this is a good time to remind you all that existing memberships of VG Tips will be extended to a date that takes into account the current lull in racing and football due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

As I mentioned in an earlier message, none of you will be out of pocket. If you are a recurring monthly member, you will continue to be covered. So let's say, for the sake of argument, racing OR football does not resume (behind . . .

Today I received a nice message from long time member Jamie. He was suggesting that I should simply leave racing alone until the sport is once again up and running in the UK. That it would be better to offer nothing than something for the sake of it. I took his words on board very seriously and I agree with their overall sentiment. I hear what you say, Jamie, and you make very valid points. Thank you.

I have spent years telling members not to bet on anything just because it is there. I have constantly banged on about being . . .

I was pleased Politesse justified my confidence on Saturday and won nicely for us at Thurles in the gorgeous county of Tipperary. It was odd watching racing from Ireland without any spectators but well done to all involved for getting the meeting on. Long may racing continue in Ireland, even if it is behind closed doors.

Sadly the extra weight did tell when the jockey aboard Sizing Pottsie decided to try and win the race from start to finish. Except for one bad jump, all was going well until two fences from home. While still in second, but a tired . . .

JULIET ROSE WON for us on Friday at Dundalk at SP odds of 15/8. A winner on a polytrack surface! Perhaps I shouldn't be so keen to readily discount all weather racing in the future.

Years ago - some of you will recall - I used to study racing at tracks such as Southwell and even Wolverhampton on a Friday or Saturday night. I must have been crazy back then, studying up to 11 or 12 race meetings for a busy Saturday. Before I learned that less can be, more often than not, more.

    Some punters do well . . .

Two weeks ago I could never have imagined that I would be offering racing analysis and tips for flat racing in March. Even less likely for racing in Ireland. And much less so would I have considered all weather racing. Needs must.

But thank heavens Irish racing will continue behind closed doors. It offers me something to get my teeth into. I’d rather not be considering flat racing at this stage of the year, but beggars cannot be choosers.

All UK racing is off until the end of April at least. So the jumps season proper is effectively over . . .

  • Cheltenham Festival 2020. Review of results for members of VG Tips

    By on 18th March 2020

Firstly, allow me to thank you for your largely positive and co-operative response to my message to members after the BHA had called off racing until at least the end of April. I am touched by your faith, loyalty, comments and praise for the results at Cheltenham. Here's what members had to say.

For those who train and ride National Hunt horses in the UK, it means the season proper is over with. Just like that! I . . .

Firstly, thank you for all your kind messages regarding the Cheltenham Festival I was pleased so many of you followed me in on the final tip of the festival - and last of the seven winners across four days - Indefatigable (photographed below).

Some of you took the 50/1 the day before, others the 40/1 and some the 25/1 SP. Regardless of what price you took, an excellent way to end the meeting. Especially for member Ashley who made the mistake of typing £25 rather than £2.50 stake and was many quids in.
    That's why I often . . .

So that was the Cheltenham Festival. Rather good, wasn't it? Rounded off by my 50/1 or 40/1 winner of the lucky last, INDEFATIGABLE. My each way NAP for the final race of the festival. For those who read the introductions to these posts, but are then not allowed to go any further unless they are members, here is what I told those members late on Thursday afternoon.

"When Indefatigable next raced at Cheltenham, she finished second behind one of our most impressive winners this week, Dame De Compagnie. Indefatigable has raced at . . .

    MIN WINS!

Possibly the most pleasing win for me at the Cheltenham Festival so far. Nothing to do with the odds. More to do with having my research confirmed and proof that sometimes it can be OK to change your mind.

I came into this festival believing, like so many people, that A Plus Tard would win the Ryanair Chase. But then I looked deeper into the relative merits of the previous races involving that one and Min.

Lots of people backed A Plus Tard because he beat Chacun Pour Soi but, as I wrote to members yesterday . . .
