Not long now until the crowds will flock to Epsom for the Oaks on May 31st and the Derby on June 1st.

The fields have shaken down a little of late, but there remain several unknowns. Sir Dragonet remains the 10/3 favourite. Not for me, thank you. Also trainer Aidan O'Brien has hinted he may swerve the Derby and send that Chester winner to a race in Ireland instead.

His stablemate Broome is well fancied by many a watcher of Irish racing and has been backed into 4/1. Another possible O'Brien contender for the Derby, Anthony . . .

It's always nice to begin a racing day with a 20/1 winner. Especially when the past the post price on the day is only half that.

I am glad my vibes were good about Good Vibes. Here's what I told members yesterday about why I fancied that one at an each way price:- "I take a chance on last time out Class 3 Salisbury winner, Good Vibes. The two year old filly is still a baby but she had two good runs in April. First when she finished second in a Class 4 maiden despite having . . .

A mixed day for trainer John Gosden at York. Lah Ti Dar won but made hard work of it. Stablemate Too Darn Hot was beaten by Telecaster, which displayed more stamina. Connections of the Telecaster appear to have made a mistake when withdrawing that winner from the Derby back in March. It would have cost £1000 to keep him entered for the race on June 1st. Now, should the owners want to put Telecaster back in for that race, it will cost them £85.000 to do so. Ouch!

Perhaps they will swerve Epsom and go for the Irish Derby . . .

No finer sight for my eyes than the Knavesmire racecourse at York being bathed in sunshine and horses able to race on what Frankie Dettori called "perfect ground."

Frankie loves the place almost as much as I do and I was delighted to see him win the first race on Wednesday aboard my 6/1 tip, First Eleven. It was a hard fought finish for Frankie but there's nobody I want more on one of my horses in that situation than Dettori. He continues to defy age and last season we saw him ride better than ever. I'm . . .

Saturday was a profitable day for myself and members of VG Tips.

Cape Byron won the Class 2 Victoria Cup handicap. Tipped to members when available at odds of 10/1, I enjoyed watching that one win and the ever reliable at Ascot Ripp Orf finish in the places at an each way price in the type of big field handicap I love from a betting perspective.

Two other winners on Saturday were Alhakmah and Anthony Van Dyck, each won for us at 2/1. I was impressed by the win by Anthony Van Dyck, which is currently 8/1 . . .

Ground conditions at Ascot turned soft on Friday and that led to loads of horses being withdrawn from racing at the meeting, including my two fancies in the very depleted 3.10 race.

9/1 each way pick Aasheq was narrowly beaten on soft going at Chester.

The surprising disappointments on the day were the runs of Austrian School and Cleonte. But I expect the excessive rainfall and resulting soft conditions had plenty to do with that.

Expect soft going again at Ascot and Lingfield on Saturday. But at least the trainers have plenty of advance warning this time around . . .

The rain fell at Chester again on Thursday but that was not a concern to the NAP sent to members two days ago, Circus Maximus. Quite appropriate that a horse so named won on the most historic racecourse in the UK, a circular course built on the site of an old Roman port, in a city surrounded by original Roman walls.

It's a splendid racecourse, in a fine city, and I hope the sun shines down on those who attend racing on Friday, the final day of the Chester May meeting.

Kew Gardens could only finish second on seasonal . . .

Jockeys aren't always on the right one of two from the same stable. On Wednesday, Frankie Dettori was aboard the John Gosden trained Fanny Logan, my 6/1 safety first each way NAP in the Cheshire Oaks. Fanny Logan was placed third, so ensuring punters got their stake back along with a small profit.

But Fanny Logan and the favourite, Manuela De Vega, were well beaten by another Gosden contender. Rob Havlin rode Mehdaayih to a good looking victory by five and a half lengths. I would expect Gosden and the owners will now supplement that winner to be . . .

Seeing the ever polite and dignified trainer Aidan O'Brien being interviewed in the winners' enclosure tells you that the flat season has well and truly begun.

The brains of Ballydoyle racing stables in Tipperary trained the winners of both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas at the weekend. I tipped and backed the first, Magna Grecia, but I only gave a good mention to the winning filly on Sunday, Hermosa. She'd previously been beaten by stablemate Iridessa but this time nothing was about to stop Hermosa (meaning beautiful in Spanish) from landing the 1000 Guineas by a length from . . .

I send out deep analysis and selections for the weekend before most of Friday's racing at Punchestown has taken place. Only 7/1 each way tip Hardline has so far returned some placed profit, finishing second behind Real Steel.

Apples Jade has flopped again and that is her done as far as I am concerned. I was far from alone in writing off Buveur D'air too soon. I give up on her. I shouldn't have given up on the winner of the Grade 1 Champions Hurdle at Punchestown today.  I was far from alone in writing off . . .
