Last Saturday went well for subscribers to VG Tips.

Magic of Light, Goshen, Yala Enki, Minella Indho, Eskylane and Defi Du Seuil all won for us. While I am persoanlly never in a rush to back horses at odds on prices, I know some members are content to do so.

But for me Magic of Light (5/2), Yala Enki (2/1 NAP) and Defi Du Seuil (11/10 SP) were value odds against winners. I have written about the latter in the blog section of the website. Right now I am feeling very clever with myself for having tipped . . .

Well, jockey Brian Hughes rode two winners at Musselburgh on Friday. Just as I confidently predicted. Only NOT the two I tipped! I could scream.

I did smack myself around the head after he won the first aboard Highway Companion at odds of 6/1. Why? Because when first looking at that race, Highway Companion was my gut instinct selection. I should have listened to the gut.

Instead, I delved into the previous form of that one and opponent Not the Chablis, which had previously beaten Highway Companion. Today Not the Chablis was pulled up two fences from home and . . .

What is left to say about Irish trainer Willie Mullins. He's brilliant. And crafty.

For the first time ever he sends a horse to race at Market Rasen in England and, what do you know? My 10/3 tip Panic Attack wins her very first race by ten lengths!

The SP odds of 5/2 were still value when you consider the margin of victory. Clearly punters were on the daughter of Canford Cliffs. I expect the bookies on course took a bit of a pounding. No idea what the attendance was but I hope the majority of the . . .

First up, I'd like to welcome newly joined VG Tips members Chris and Daniel and also the returning Andy. The latter will know how I work and the rules I tend to apply to betting. While Chris and Daniel will have received a welcome e-mail from me that outlines that in detail.

I am currently writing a follow up personal message to members. One that seeks to clarify the last personal message sent out which, among other things, detailed the 2019 profit. I have subsequently received a handful of queries about that message. Questions from members seeking clarification . . .

I'm writing this on Friday afternoon, soon after the meeting at Huntingdon was called off before it had begun due to rising flood water. A shame for all the horses, jockeys and trainers who had already made their way to the track and a blow for those who run the racecourse.

Such courses rely on attractive meetings going ahead. It is a financial blow when they don't. So I will temper my annoyance at my having wasted Thursday studying form for the meeting that never happened. Hours of life I'll not get back.

    It will also upset . . .

There has been so much online talk about whether or not the Cheltenham Festival should be extended to five days.

In the words of Frankie Howerd... No! No! and thrice No!

I would argue the meeting should have remained as a three day affair. But that particular horse has bolted.

There is a campaign to have the festival finish on a Saturday so that people who cannot get away from their workplace during the week, can enjoy at least one day at the greatest race meeting in the world. I get that argument and there is a case for the . . .

A new year has dawned and we are all excited at the racing year ahead. Especially so as this jumps seasons begins to peak.

All eyes are on the Cheltenham Festival in March and, as punters, we must make sure we have funds to bet with come that top class meeting. Between now and then racing tends to enter what one bookie described to me as a 'fug.'

While there are still some races of interest in January and February when horses will be given an outing prior to the festival, others will increasingly be wrapped in cotton wool in . . .

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I wish you and all those you care about a pleasant, peaceful and, of course, profitable 2020.

The past year was another profitable one for me and many of you. For me it was the 21st consecutive year of finishing ahead of the bookie. Some years by only hundreds of pounds, most years by a four figure sum, some years by a five figure sum. Either way is fine by me. Any profit is good and if you enjoy following racing and football, and betting on one or both sports, then making some money from something you . . .

As long time subscribers to my VG Tips selections service know by now, I love big field handicaps and Grand Nationals. Today we won the Welsh Grand National for the second year running when Potters Corner was the first Welsh owned and trained winner of this race for many a year.

My preview analysis outlined why I fancied Pooters Corner and I was liking what I saw from him long before the finish of the race. Plenty of stamina, trained specifically to win that race and one that enjoys plenty of soft turf underfoot. Potters Corner was always up front . . .

The racing came so thick and fast on Thursday it was hard for me to keep up with it all.

HONEST VIC, an 11/ each way NAP from me, has just won the lucky last at Kempton Park. It's always nice to spot one at a price bigger than I believe it should be in the betting market. That one stood out when I analysed the race and I am glad he justified the confidence I expressed and that lovely members of VG Tips such as Tania were on. As was I.

There were winners and losers . . .
