Some punters follow French racing much closer than I do. Frankly, there's plenty of racing taking place in the UK on all but fewer than a handful of days each year to occupy my mind.

I am sometimes asked why I so rarely offer tips for racing in France. Races in which UK trainers send over the odd runner because prize money is superior across the channel. It is because of unknowns. Racing packed full of French bred and trained horses are not for me because I know so little about those horses and how good their form when . . .

September was fairly rubbish for me. Both on the betting and health front. The latter being far more important than the former, even to this seasoned punter.

So it was nice to begin October with 4 winners from 4 tips on Friday. A 100% record on the day.

TYSON FURY at generous odds of 4/1 was the last of the quartet to win. The day began well when 5/2 Ascot selection PIRANESI triumphed. Squeezed between those two, 4/7 tip BERKSHIRE ROCCO won at SP odds of 1/2 and my first . . .

All eyes are on France for the weekend. The Prix de 'l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday looks like being a cracker run on heavy going. Today's news was that trainer Aidan O'Brien has withdrawn Love due to the soft/heavy ground which will not improve with yet further rain to fall on Paris. That has led to the price about Enable shortening as favourite. Can the mare create history and win the race for a record third time? We shall see.

But on paper at least, it's no one horse race. Far from it . . .

  • How long before more football clubs follow Macclesfield Town and cease trading? While we were all rightly complaining about the new ludicrous handball rule in football, an estate agent in the North West of England was publishing a 'for sale' advert online. Selling the home ground of the historic club that was an integral part of the town of Macclesfield.

While the top clubs were spending millions and millions of pounds on buying yet more players at a time when some of those same clubs are, or were recently, furloughing their staff; Macclesfield Town went out of business. It's . . .

I am sending out Saturday's selections just after my first on Friday has raced. And won! ISABELLA GILES, a 2/1 tip, won the Rockfel Stakes in good fashion and with something to spare. She could be winning a big race for fillies next season. Have her in your notebook or tracker.

I did watch the race in which I didn't offer a tip. A race reduced to four runners and one that Alpinista would have won had the jockey not gone for a gap, got blocked out of it, and the filly caught heels in . . .

  • Last weekend saw us profit from wins by Arsenal (NAP) at 1/2, Everton at the same price, Lincoln City at 9/5 if you backed them in the outright market, or 19/20 in the Win/Draw No Bet option and the Salford City win a good price of 5/4 (they won 0-4 at Grimsby).

Had Jorgino not missed his late penalty for Chelsea (rare for him to miss from the spot), the both teams to score bet for the game against Liverpool would also have paid off.

But four winning tips from six in England was . . .

LOST IN SPACE (a 5/2 NAP) and the well backed on the day LA BAROSSA were the winners on Thursday.

Toromona and Spirit of Bermuda were beaten into second while the final selection, First Winter, was very disappointing at Newmarket.

I will cut to the chase because valued subscriber Bob lives in Thailand where the time difference is six or seven hours ahead. He often finds himself receiving them at midnight his time and getting up to read my analysis at 6am. That's dedication Bob!

I am also getting on with it because today . . .

No joy in the Ayr Gold Cup last weekend, won by a very well backed by punters former winner for us, Nihaarr. But 6/4 tip ADDEYBB won the Class 1 Listed Doonside Stakes for us and Admirality, a 12/1 each way selection, was second in the Silver Cup, so returning each way backers some profit.

I tipped the first two home in the Group 3 fillies stakes. UMM KULTHUM, a 2/1 win only tip, justified confidence and won by a length at SP odds of 9/4. In second was Scarlet Bear . . .

Some racecourses have been so unlucky both before, during and after the Coronavirus pandemic lockdown. Perhaps none unluckier than the wonderful racecourse at Ayr.

Good people run the course and if it's not a virus that has seen them lose race meetings, it has been the weather. The Ayr Gold Cup meeting was wiped out by the weather in 2017. The sun shone down on the magnificent setting last year but, more recently, Ayr has lost further race meetings. The financial losses to all racecourses through nobody being able to attend meetings has been huge. Only recently, Doncaster lost . . .
