  • Another football season begins and I take out from the cupboard my crystal ball. Shaped like a football, it is not sponsored by some corporate company. It's just a plain, old fashioned crystal ball I use each August in the hope that, come the following May, I appear to have all the skills of someone who can look into the future and predict some ups and downs in four divisions.

Last season went well. When I look back at the predictions offered to existing members twelve months ago, forgive me for patting myself on the back. Many punters do . . .

  • How long can we punters live off past glories? A day? A week? One year? Or longer?

Until I lose my mental faculties, I'll remember tipping the first two horses home in the 2016 Grand National, including tipping the winner Rule the World at odds of 50/1.

But, as mother always said, pride comes before a fall. So there is only so long that we can dine out on such fabulous successes. Some people judge you on the latest tips, not past ones.

Time to turn our attention to the 2017 running of the most watched horse race . . .

  • Geoff Banks on Cheltenham 2017: ‘Jump racing cannot be a one week event.’

  • And so it is that we arrive at the final day of the Cheltenham Festival. There's no hiding it, this has been the toughest four day festival for punters for many a year.

We cannot be surprised at that fact. While we were pleased that some of the hot favourites never made it to the course, so making the races much more open and competitive, that also meant finding winners would be more challenging. And so it has proved. I've found this festival to be the toughest for six years.

Even in years when I've 'only' had . . .

  • Did you see Might Bite win for us at 4/1? If not, I will not spoil things for you. Go find a recording of the race, especially the finish. It's hilarious. My heart rate increased somewhat.

The sun beat down on Ladies' Day at Cheltenham, which was good to see. But, and I am furious about this, they are watering the racecourse overnight tonight. This habit of watering without needing to annoys trainers whose horses prefer Good ground. Racecourses should only be watered if the ground is so firm that it is dangerous to horses.

    That is not . . .

  • Well that was a strange day. A very long time since I fired blanks on one day at the Cheltenham Festival.

A hard luck story or two for sure. Charbel falling two from home when in front of Altior. Ballyandy meeting more traffic than most BMW drivers do on the M25.

Apple's Jade doing what she loves to do to me. That is winning when I don't back her, and coming second when my money is down on her. She beat off both Vroum Vroum Mag and Limini to ensure trainer Gordon Elliott had a very good day . . .

  • So here we are, day one of the mighty Cheltenham Festival and the forecast for the UK is for a largely dry week. That will suit some of my ante-post bets (some of which were placed as long ago as April 2016!)

Ground on the soft side of Good will be to the liking of many trainers. They will be praying the course is not watered. It shouldn't be. If we have proper ground, leave it be. Racecourses should only ever be watered if the ground is so firm as to be potentially dangerous to the horses.

    Betting . . .

  • Cheltenham Festival. 48 hour ante-post preview

    By on 12th March 2017

48 hours to go until the first roar fills the air at Prestbury Park, Cheltenham. A roar that tells you the Cheltenham Festival has begun and four days of the best National Hunt racing is ahead of us.

It looks as though I may have already won my first ante-post bet, and the racing has yet to begin. On December 30th I had a bet at odds of 13/8 on which race Vroum Vroum Mag would race in. I felt sure it would be the Mares' Hurdle and, this Sunday morning, trainer Willie Mullins has confirmed she will . . .
