Sizing Tennessee was a confident racing tip to members of VG Tips for the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase. Both as an ante-post selection the Tuesday before racing at odds of 20/1, and again the night before the by then diminished race at odds of 16/1.
Sizing Tennessee, my NAP selection for the race, won easily at SP odds of 16/1 and VG Tips members were suitably happy.
Andy tweeted: “Well done Vern. Another great shout.”
Yuri, a regular and choosy punter who I have known for a long time, said: “Well done Vernon. Nothing changes. Good few years I think of knowing you.”
Long time member Brian tweeted: “Great Pick (again).”
Michael, who immediately renewed his membership of VG Tips for another year simply said: “GET ******* IN!”
Here’s what I told subscribers to my long established and respected selections service both on Tuesday (when 23 horses were due to race) and on Friday (when it became clear that only 12 would be taking part in the race at Newbury the next day).
“Sizing Tennessee carries only 11 stone this day and that must give the Colin Tizzard trained 10 year old a chance. He was 21 lengths in third behind runner up Ms Parfois at the Cheltenham Festival last March. But Sizing Tennessee is better off at the weights this time around and he was still competitive with them at the 3 mile 2 stage of that 3 mile 7 race. That light weight for Sizing Tennessee is staring out at me but his jumping needs to be better in such a competitive race.”
It was much better and I am delighted that the one that was “staring out at me” (even when 23 were declared to race) was the comfortable 10 length winner of the former Hennessy Gold Cup. It was an excellent performance by horse and jockey Tom Scudamore.
I was especially happy for the deluge of new members who joined in the days before a race I have always loved and have tipped the winner of a few times in the past twenty years – including Triolo D’Alene at odds of 20/1 in 2013.
Those who chose to join VG Tips in the past week or two timed it well. Two 16/1 winners in the space of seven days, Caid du Lin and Sizing Tennessee.
Earlier in the day Santini had also won well for members at odds of 11/8. Santini is one to watch out for come the Cheltenham Festival next March. The Nicky Henderson trained gelding won the John Francome Novices’ Chase in taking fashion on the type of soft ground the gelding would have wanted. The going at Prestbury Park next Spring may not be that easy underfoot.
Subscribers to VG Tips will receive further ante-post analysis from me for the feature races to come later this month, the King George V1 Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day and the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow the following day.
Then, in 2019, my very own ‘Cheltenham Choices’ series of features will let members know which horses I have my eye on for the festival next March.
