With racing authorities hopeful that the Derby will be able to take place in 2020, I’ve been looking back at some past classic versions of the race on the Epsom Downs.
I began watching racing on black and white television in the sixties and I expect I saw the below race in the company of my father. But I don’t remember it. Having just watched it back, I wanted to share with you the wonder that was Sea Bird.
Winner of seven of his eight career races, Sea Bird also won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Below is the 1965 Derby at Epsom. What a victory! Look at the ease with which the winner is produced late to romp home.
