We are at that late stage of the flat season when trainers send out for the first time those foaled in the spring or late winter. They race for the first time in the autumn and while the trainers will be hoping young colts and fillies win first time out, they will be more concerned with how they perform with a view to next season. It's about promise.
They may win first time on a racecourse. They may win in September or October, after which the majority of them will be put away and worked on over the winter . . .
