The flat season proper nears its end. Before you know it, we'll have Champions Day during which some of the stars of the past few months will take each other on.
Taking each other on is something many trainers shy away from these days, in both codes of racing. That's a shame. I know it is so often about stud fees for when a winning horse is retired, but the increasing tendency to retire big race winners at a young age - while avoiding matching up against one of equal ability - is a negative for the sport.
