It's been a soggy year for racing. By now we should be looking forward to a Coral Cup meeting at Sandown raced on Good or even Good to Firm ground.
But, as at Friday afternoon, the word 'soft' appears in the ground conditions at that racecourse. Clerk of the Course Andrew Cooper knows his work. If he says it is soft or good to soft, you can trust his word.
That is not the case at all racecourses. The ground conditions matter because some horses are very choosy about the conditions they like underfoot. It is a serious consideration . . .
