Having watched the gripping finish to the feature race at Newbury on Saturday, I feel for any punters who backed the narrowly beaten Whisper.
The winner, Total Recall, got up to win late on and by the smallest of margins. Jockey Paul Townend was then given a four day ban for excessive use of the whip from the second last fence. So did Whisper lose the race because the jockey aboard the winner knowingly broke the whip rules? Probably. Only Townend knows if he deliberately used the whip too often.
Instead of a four day whip ban, why not reverse . . .
