The first time I found myself working at York Racecourse it was in 1980 when I was the sports researcher for Yorkshire Television. What should have been a day that involved me simply help the crew carry the gear, have a bet or two and socialise plenty; saw me interviewing a young Walter Swinburn. A jockey who would never use three words when one would do.
I was not an on camera interviewer back then. But the reporter got stuck in traffic and I found myself having a microphone thrust into my hand and a monosyllabic jockey not wanting to . . .
