Ireland is the spiritual home of thoroughbred National Hunt racing. The crowd I saw attend Fairyhouse racecourse on Wednesday was not a large one, but it was an appreciative one and people were there to watch the racing. Too often in England I see people go racing to do anything except watch the sport on offer. Usually they go there to get drunk.
Today I saw numerous people walk up to the widow of trainer Dessie Hughes and offer their condolences to Eileen, who only the day before buried her husband.
