Getting beaten into second place can be annoying. Especially when you are on a horse to win, rather than to be placed.
Last night the more conservative punter could have been on Jungle Cat each way at 6/1. That way, when the cat only managed to come home as the runner up, your stake money would have still been in your possession. I call it shrewd betting and do not believe anyone should be ashamed of being so cautious. Profitable punting over a year is not simply about picking winners.
