Day one of the Newmarket July meeting was as open and competitive as expected.
But I was left spitting feathers.
First at myself for chickening out of the first race, when my instinct was to select the eventual winner, Feel Like Dancing. But I sat on the fence.
Secondly when Maputo - a NAP of mine at Royal Ascot - won by a country mile today. I was far from alone in being put off by the poor showing at Ascot which trainer Mark Johnston said today was a "total mystery" as he "was very hopeful of a win at Ascot."
