There are 101 flood warnings across the UK.
Every county in the country has at least one flood warning, so racing is not out of the woods yet.
The meeting planned for Fontwell on Thursday was abandoned days ago.
That leaves us with only one turf meeting, the one up at Catterick. A course which, if the owners have their way, will stage all weather racing in years to come. Like there is not enough of that already!
There is an inspection planned for Catterick at 7.30am UK time.
So, just in case Catterick is off, I also offer up a couple of selections on the fibresand at Southwell.
Getabuzz was beaten in the final strides of a race on Boxing Day. A furlong shorter, and a little less wandering in either direction, and the gelding would have won. So it is that trainer Tim Easterby drops Getabuzz back a little in distance and applies blinkers this day. The blinkers and the services of Tony McCoy today should concentrate the geldings mind.
Johnny Og and Sealous Scout look to be the chief dangers.
Win Getabuzz – 7/4
More often than not I tend to stay loyal to horses that have won for me back to back. So I stick with our two time winner Merlins Wish. He has been raised 13 pounds by the handicapper but did win a slightly lower class of race by a whopping 25 lengths last time out. So is taken to win one more time.
Diamond Harry is not the star he once was but drops in grade here and was a gallant fourth over the cross country course at Cheltenham in November.
Win Merlins Wish 2/1
If all 8 horses race, I would not put any of you each way backers off having a few bob on Caramelita. Shelley Birkett is an accomplished jockey who claims 5 pounds off in the saddle today. That means the former course and distance winning mare races from her lowest handicap mark since winning here in November. I think she has every chance today.
But I plump for top weight Thorpe Bay. The young jockey has had only 13 races, winning 3. But his 7 pound claim in the saddle wipes out the 6 pound penalty imposed for the last victory. The gelding has won his last two races, both at this course. The last victory came in a slightly higher class event.
Maakirr has also won over course and distance and is another dropping in class today, albeit while carrying a penalty.
Win Thorpe Bay 9/4
Jamie Spencer is not the favourite jockey of every punter, but I think he has improved considerably the past 2-3 years. He has two rides at Southwell today and hangs around to ride Lesha in this race. It looks a significant jockey booking to me. Whether or not Lesha, a winner of a race over a mile at this course, will have the stamina for this 1 mile 3 furlong race remains to be seen.
Win Lesha 3/1
That’s all for racing on Thursday.
I shall be back in touch that day with weekend football tips and racing selections for Friday.
