33/1 was a great price for members of VG Tips to benefit from when my winning each way tip for the Northumberland Plate, Nicholas T, came from last to first to land the big all weather prize at Newcastle.
But I managed to get odds of 80/1 minutes before the off. Having tipped the Jim Goldie trained winner the night before the race, when 28/1 was the best price on offer in the betting market, I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw those odds drift to 40/1, 50/1 and 80/1 in the hour before the off. I backed the horse each way.
Jockey Ben Robinson (below) had the eventual winner tucked in at the back of the field for the majority of the race and I thought my ambitious punt was lost. But the jockey produced the horse perfectly to lead in the latter stages of the race. Although Nicholas T had never raced a distance close to the 2 miles 56 yards on Saturday, I was confident Nichols T would stay the trip.
Here is what I wrote to members the day before racing at Newcastle.
“The horse drawn in stall 17 has either won or finished in the first five since 2017 and that is where Nicolas T is berthed this year. Yet to race over this far, the Jim Goldie trained gelding has won at Newcastle in the past. He has been staying on at the close of his races over shorter and might be able to defy a 5 pound penalty.”
Some subscribers to my VG Tips service were on at various prices and got in touch with me afterwards, to say ‘thank you.’
Ivan hasn’t been with that long and e-mailed simply to express his pleasure at the win. “Nicholas T. Nice one. Well done.”
Loyal member John tweeted @betonsportstips to say:- “Well done Vernon 40/1. Come on people you gotta sign up. You won’t get better for your money.”
