National Hunt Eyecatchers January

Chutney Dave at UttoxeterChutney Dave’s January Spotlight

We have arranged for VG Tips members a sample of  David Massey aka Chutney Dave January’s National Hunt Eyecatchers list.  About David, he’s a racing consultant who travels the courses around the country and is key part of the ‘Uttoxeter Twitterati’.

Two of the ‘eyecatchers’ have entries for Cheltenham, so keep an eye out for when they run.

Edmund Kean (Trainer, D. Pipe)

Leicester, 7th January

Never put a foot wrong on this, his chasing debut and showed that his third in the EBF final last season was no fluke. Looks a stayer of immense potential and it will be interesting to see where he ends up at the Festival – he’s entered up in both the RSA and the four miler. Will be gaining more experience this week at either Ludlow or Kempton and is one to be followed long-term.

Future Entries: 7th February, Kempton. 9th February, Exeter. 11th & 12th March, Cheltenham

Smiles For Miles (Trainer, D. Pipe)

Doncaster 8th Jan, Exeter 14th Jan

Has twice this month given the impression he’s being lined up for a long-distance handicap hurdle, under two unusually quietish rides from Tom Scudamore. Never put in the race at Doncaster but stayed on well from 2 out under his own steam, and a similar story at Exeter when dropped back another furlong in trip. He’s entered up all over the place this week (over 3m plus) and needs carful monitoring off an opening mark of 109.

Future Entries: None at the time of writing

Deputy Dan (Trainer, O. Sherwood)

Warwick 11th Jan

An obvious one but he goes on as he’s improving at such a rate he has to be a serious contender for the Neptune at the Festival. Strict reading of this form makes him a 140+ horse and he appears to still be improving with racing. Won this with a degree of ease, held up off a decent pace and his Warwick run here in December when just a length off Champagne West showed that he doesn’t need heavy ground to operate either.

Future Entries: 12th & 14th March, Cheltenham

Huff And Puff (Trainer, V. Williams)

Ludlow 16th Jan

Useful on the Flat for Amanda Perratt, winning his last two at Haydock (good to firm) and at Kempton on the AW before being picked up for just over 40k at the sales in October. Travelled up really well on his first go over hurdles here behind the useful Mountain King but clearly found the heavy ground all against him and couldn’t quicken with them off the home turn. Once the ground dries up there will be races to be won with him, especially if connections decide to get him handicapped on softer……

Future Entries: None at the time of writing
