In a statement of intent, Chelsea announced that manager Jose Mourinho has signed a new four year contract.
Now we all know contracts in football are about as meaningful as those handshakes between managers before a game. But this move at least leads us to believe the manager and owner intend to work together amicably for a longer period of time than was the case during Mourinho’s first spell at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho said: “If the club is happy, I am happy. It is important we have continuity and I hope we can enjoy more success in the future. It is the club that is closest to my heart.”
Will we see him smile more often this season?
He says: “Even if I win a title, I am never happy.”
What will be his last words to the players as they kick off the new season with a home match against Swansea City?
In true Jose fashion, he replies: “Sometime I say to the players, ‘Enjoy the game.’ They know what I mean. I mean that if they lose, they won’t enjoy it. If they win, they will. That’s it.”
