Ian McMillan on pies, peas, onion bags, dee daars, dingles and the language of football

I have long admired the words, wit and wisdom of Ian McMillan.

The poet and so called ‘Bard of Barnsley’ fell in love with football relatively late in life.

He believes you should support the club based in the town or city you come from. So it is that he currently faces the prospect of suffering relegation once again.

He is a Barnsley fan. The Reds look set to drop out of the Championship at the end of this season.

But the game itself is just one aspect of football that fascinates Ian. It is the language of football he loves. And the characters who go to games.

Here is the first half of my interview with him shot at Oakwell, the home of Barnsley Football club.

After a half time pie and pint, look out for the second half of this enjoyable and informative chat. Coming soon to VG Tips.
