My age group of football supporters remember the era of proper wingers.
One of the best was Liverpool’s Peter Thompson. I was sad to read of his death today. In 1996 I interviewed him at length on camera and he was as great at talking as he was beating defenders and putting in dangerous crosses in an era when Liverpool FC were a force in the top flight.
How I wish he had lived until May in the hope of seeing of Liverpool winning the Premier League.
