England play Scotland in a World Cup qualifier on Friday night. Gordon Strachan takes his Scottish team to Wembley safe in the knowledge that qualification, and with it his job, may rest on the outcome of this game.
Charlie Adam is an experienced Premier League footballer who is mystified as to why “my face doesn’t fit” with Strachan. Adam, now playing for in form Stoke City, says the last contact he had with Gordon Strachan was two summers ago. He was asked if he knew why he wasn’t in the current Scotland squad.
Adam replied: “No. There are lads in the squad who are playing in League 1 in Scotland. No disrespect to them, but when you are going into big International games surely when you turn round and you can see lads sitting on the bench who have played at the highest level, who’ve got a number of caps behind them, you think about putting them on as well. I just don’t understand it at the moment.
“He (Strachan) would probably say I don’t play enough games, but I disagree with him. He’s given people an opportunity who have not been playing for their club for a number of months.
“Lee Wallace at left back has played really well for Rangers, he couldn’t get in the squad. We had a guy, Andy Robertson, played really well against Malta but was dropped against Slovakia.”
Charlie Adam also had something to say about the fortunes of a young player who is now officially the most expensive Scottish footballer in the world. A 19 year old player many people think could be Scotland’s answer to Gareth Bale.
Adam said: “We have a kid (Oliver Burke) who is bought by RB Leipzig for £13 million and wasn’t even in the Scotland squad after he supposedly played really well against Malta.
“There are good players playing well at the likes of Celtic and Aberdeen, but there are players in the English Championship and Premier League who could be playing. Alan Hutton could be playing for Scotland. Alan has retired. He’s only retired because he knows he’s not going to get a game. He’s still the best right back Scotland have got, so why is he not playing? Phil Bardsley has played the last eight or nine games for us at Stoke. Why is he not in the squad?
“There’s no communication. I’m not saying he should call me or that I’m the best player for Scotland. But I feel I could add something different to what they have. We are not a nation that is blessed with thirty or forty top players, we’re not an England. We need the best players available.
“Without a shadow of a doubt certain faces don’t fit in that squad. That’s why he’s not picking them and obviously my face doesn’t fit at the moment.”
The match between England and Scotland kicks off on Friday evening at 7.45pm and is being transmitted on ITV. The current best prices are 4/11 about an England win. The draw is priced 4/1 and Scotland are as big as 19/2 to win at Wembley.
