Several members joined me in getting on Sunderland to win the Tyne-Wear derby, at odds of 7-2 and 10-3.
I suggested to members that Sunderland may well win at Newcastle due, in no small part, to what I call NMS.
New Manager Syndrome.
How often do players lift their game to impress a new boss? And, in Paolo Di Canio, they have a man full of passion.
Players who, for reasons only they know, did not play as well as they can for Martin O’Neill, came alive for their new Italian manager.
7-2 and 10-3 were generous odds from the bookie. Available only because Sunderland are fighting to avoid relegation. But the odds did not take into account the fact that Newcastle had played a Europa League game as recently as Thursday. And the Magpies have not been in great form in the Premier League themselves of late.
How often this season have we seen teams that play in Europe on Thursday night, go on to lose their next league fixture only three days later? It happens often.
Sunderland beat Newcastle 3-0 and Di Canio joined in the celebrations.
As did those members of VG Tips who sent me evidence of their winnings via photographs of their bet slips.
