Darren Barker tells his life story to Ian Ridley

Darren Barker, boxer

There are two books about boxers that you must read. One is the Donald McRae book about the gay boxer Emile Griffith. The other is the fine book written by Ian Ridley and Darren Barker. ‘Dazzling Darkness’ is a story of a reluctant boxer who fought on despite the death of his brother, also a talented fighter.

Gary and Darren Barker were known as the fabulous Barker boys. But after Gary died in a car accident, Darren had a decision to make. Should he return to the boxing ring or hang up his gloves once and for all?

Darren always says his late brother Gary was the better boxer. Gary died in a car accident just as his own fight career was beginning to flourish. How did Darren come to terms with that loss? How easy for him was it to resume his career as a boxer? Who helped him along the way?

The story is made for a movie. Ray Winstone has expressed an interest in playing the role of the therapist who helped Darren overcome his grief and build a title winning career.

Here is my 15 minute interview with Ian Ridley. At the end of the interview there are details on how to enter a draw for a signed copy of the book, Dazzling Darkness.
