Racing tips

  • The flat season is coming to a peak. The weekend after this one we have top class racing at Ascot, including an all time favourite of mine, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. That meeting also includes the Juddmonte and International Stakes.

That is quickly followed by some very good racing at Goodwood over the final days of July. I look forward to those meetings.

At the time of writing none of the Friday evening racing selections have raced. So I must go straight on to Saturday and flat meetings at Newmarket, Newbury and the feature race across . . .

  • I write this before the selections for Thursday evening have raced.

I was asked the other day what a punter should do if having a bad run of results.

    1. Walk away for a while. Clear your head. Leave punting alone for a week or a month.
    2. Don't panic.
    3. Do not despair
    4. Go back to basics

By that I mean take a look at what worked for you when everything was going well. That may be over a period of many years, as it has been for me. Or it . . .

  • Unlike some punters, I have time and respect for the dour Scotsman Mark Johnston. A trainer based in North Yorkshire, he is not afraid to speak his mind.

It seems he has stirred a hornets nest by suggesting that betting should not be a part of the racing coverage in 2017 when ITV take over the contract to broadcast racing on terrestrial television.

The reaction has been damning. Bookies and punters seem united in telling Mark Johnston that, but for the betting industry, racing in the UK would be on its knees.

The fact is that many people only watch . . .

  • Pedigree is very important when researching the background of younger horses.

Not every descendant of a top class horse will go on to emulate a parent. But many will follow in their footsteps.

On Friday Seven Heavens, available at 2/1 when I alerted you, did indeed prove to be a chip off the old block. The son of Frankel proved to be another winning newcomer from that sire. Frankel keeps producing winners. No surprise there.

Another son of Frankel races on Saturday. Cunco has raced twice so far and also won on debut.

On Friday Besharah was beaten into . . .

  • Oh So Terrible!

The horse I hoped would save my bacon on what was a poor day of punting, went bonkers before the 4.20 race, ran away and was withdrawn from that race.

It is believed the 2 year old was spooked by a drone camera.

American trainer Wesley Ward is going to have to think again about where next to race Oh So Terrible.

I was wrong to oppose one that has won for members twice in the past. That was Mehmas, which will now race at the Glorious Goodwood meeting next month.

What do you do after . . .

  • Welcome to Viktor, John, Colin and Keith. New members of my VG TIPS selection service.

Though long term members have heard this all before, it is worth reiterating certain advice.

You don't have to bet on any or all of my selections. You should read my analysis, take on board all I have to say about certain races and horses, and make your own mind up what you fancy backing. If anything. There is no rule nor a law that says you have to bet every day. I don't.

I am always looking out for potential value in . . .

  • It's been a soggy year for racing. By now we should be looking forward to a Coral Cup meeting at Sandown raced on Good or even Good to Firm ground.

But, as at Friday afternoon, the word 'soft' appears in the ground conditions at that racecourse. Clerk of the Course Andrew Cooper knows his work. If he says it is soft or good to soft, you can trust his word.

That is not the case at all racecourses. The ground conditions matter because some horses are very choosy about the conditions they like underfoot. It is a serious consideration . . .

  • On Saturday we can look forward to some top class racing at Sandown Park.

Will the classy The Gukha get the better of Time Test and the other 5 runners in the Coral Eclipse? Certainly the odds for that pair right now are very tempting.

Can Frankie Dettori win earlier in the day aboard the John Gosden trained filly called Snow Moon?

And what about the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks up at Haydock? That looks like being a close run affair.

But first we have to look at racing tomorrow.

On Friday I head north to South Yorkshire and Doncaster . . .

  • A 20/1 winning newcomer is always welcome. Emmie won for members at Newbury on Thursday at that price. The High Chaparal filly won for us by two and three quarter lengths. 14/1 when I selected her as an each way bet for members, the price drifted out to 20/1, but she easily beat the favourite.

And we had a winner on Friday at 3/1. Hornsby was 11/4 when I selected that one to win and the SP price was bigger. I love it when that happens.

    Don't worry when the price for a selection . . .
