Racing tips

  • The December meeting at Cheltenham has long been a favourite of mine. It looks less competitive on Friday than is usually the case and it includes the Cross Country race that was moved from earlier in the year because there had not been enough rainfall. There still hasn't been and a much smaller field contests that race on Friday (on ground being watered) than is usualy the case. Hence why I am not offering a selection in the marathon Cross Country race for the first time in many  years.

There is also a meeting up at Doncaster and it . . .

  • What a fabulous day of racing on Saturday. I'm not just talking about our winners at 7/1, 15/8 and 11/8. As de Mee  won the Grand Sefton Chase for Paul Nicholls and the early price of 7/1 was value and almost twice the SP price.

I am speaking of the exciting races on view, regardless of whether or not you had a bet in the race. Remember, racing is a sport to watch in the first instance. It should never be looked upon purely as another betting opportunity. The . . .

Frost got into the ground at Exeter on Friday morning and we're now entering the time of the year when meetings will be abandoned for all manner of weather related reasons.

Saturday should be OK. There are good meetings on both sides of the Irish sea. Sandown stages what looks to me to be a disappointing size of field for the Tingle Creek, Aintree offers us an ultra competitive looking big field Becher Chase and, over in Ireland, there is some good racing on both Saturday and Sunday.

  • It's only last weekend that we enjoyed winners at odds of 12/1 (Empire of Dirt at Navan) and 10/1 (Native River tipped to win the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury when available at 11/1). Even at 6/1 the night before racing, Native River proved to be a value winner.

A week is a long time in racing. I call my service 'Something for the Weekend' because, more and more, the midweek fixtures are poor. Unless there are high grade feature meetings being staged, too many of the run of the mill midweek fixtures are bookie . . .

  • Revenge is a dish best served cold, so it is often said.

And two winners at Newbury certainly exacted revenge upon opponents that had previously beaten them.

24 hours ago I was tempted to stay loyal to Clan des Obeaux but there was not statistical reason why that Paul Nicholls runner should reverse form with Protex Des Flos, which beat Clan des Obeaux at Cheltenham last January.

But, of course, there is no better trainer at improving a horse than Nicholls and Clan des Obeaux won easily. Too easily for the trainers liking.

Twelve days ago, Behind Time beat Solomn . . .

  • It's day one of the two day Hennessy Gold Cup meeting at Newbury.

I am attending the meeting and looking forward to seeing in action some of the best national hunt horses around at the moment.

There will be a mixture of experienced thoroughbreds whose best days may be behind them, and some younger legs whose best days are to come.

This meeting is when the jumps trainers like Nicholls, Hobbs, Henderson, Fry, Tizzard and Skelton get serious about taking on each other via their best horses.

  • Well that was a good day at the office on Friday. Present Man won at 9/2. I am baffled why the price drifted out that big from the 11/4 available last night. But it was good news for members that it did. Remember, the horse does not know his or her price has got bigger, do they?

Thomas Brown went in the other direction and anyone who took the 5/4 last night about that Nicky Henderson winner did well. The SP was only 4/5. The other Henderson horse mentioned n my preview drifted in price. Amazingly . . .

  • Sirabad was a very pleasing winner for us on Thursday.

Pleasing because we took the widely available early price of 11/2 (the SP was only 11/4). Pleasing because Sirabad won by 9 lengths (from second placed Red Devil Star, which I mentioned as the chief threat). Pleasing because it backs up the form of Anthony, which finished behind Sarabad last time out but went on to win a Grade 3 race since.

At least one member ended up placing two each way bets that included two Paul Nicholls horses. In each they placed Sirabad at 11/2, and . . .

  • Soon the top class race meetings will be with us.

We can look forward to the Betfair Chase at Haydock this Saturday, the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury the week after and then - before we know it - the feast of racing on offer on Boxing Day.

Fear not. Still time to shop for and wrap up your Christmas presents. If you care about racing and the welfare of jockeys, why not consider buying yourself or a loved one a present from the Injured Jockeys Fund.

This very hard working and . . .
