  • At Thurles on Thursday, The Storyteller, a 7/2 tip from me yesterday, beat the Willie Mullins trained favourite and won for us at an SP price of 5/2. That was th ebest outcome on the day.

Icario, my 5/1 tip to beat another Mullins favourite did indeed finish in front of that one, but only when coming second.

And the only favourite I tipped on the day, Sub Lieutenant, looked all over the winner of the feature race until running out of steam late on and being caught by Sizing John.

Boagarius finished third at Chepstow in . . .

  • It was the philosopher Freidrich Nietzsche who said the following: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

    How very true.

And he was a winner for us on Wednesday. Not the man himself, of course, he's long since met his philisophical maker. But the horse named after him. NIETZSCHE was my chief fancy on Wednesday and I was surprised, though not worried, when I saw 15 minutes before the start of that race at Market Rasen that the price had drifted to 11/4. So I put a little more on. As I predicted yesterday, young claiming . . .

  • Racing is busy eating itself.

Bookies, the Jockey Club, trainers, jockeys, owners disagreeing over the rights or wrongs of a plan to close Kempton Park but build another new all weather track, this time at Newmarket.

I have never known a sport that is so often its own worst enemy.

Put ongood quality racing and people will come. As they shall eight weeks from now when, thank heavens, the Cheltenham Festival will begin in front of a vast crowd that will roar.

That's not the case tomorrow! Although I will roar should an audacious, possibly bonkers each way bet . . .

  • Wow! That was some finish between Divin Bere and Master Blueyes at Huntingdon. The Nicky Henderson trained Divin Bere won by a neck.

Has that put me off backing Master Blueyes each way for the Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on Wednesday March 15th? No. Quite the opposite. And the best thing is the bookies have left Master Blueyes priced at 20/1 for that race.

Henderson also trained odds on winners O O Seven (5/6) and Burbank (1/2). If you took my suggestion and placed O O Seven and Divin Bere in a win . . .

  • Introduction written on Thursday evening...

It's Friday the 13th. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, the weather might. Jack Frost is accompanied by snow in some parts of the UK. The east may suffer lowest temperatures and, at the time of writing, Huntingdon have called an inspection for 8am.

It may be that there turns out to be no racing worth touching on Friday. But the weather is something out of the control of all of us, punters included.

We can, however, prevent The Jockey Club from its greedy plan to sell off Kempton Park for residential development. I . . .

  • Pete the Feat won the veteran's race at odds of 20/1 on Saturday. I must have spent almost one hour studying his form on Friday. Why? Purely because the old boy was carrying the least weight of all the old boys in the field. That clearly helped.

No matter. My two each way selections finished second and third respectively and, at odds of 10/1 and 20/1, Theatrical Star and Loose Chips returned decent each way profit.

And the early price about our winner Finian's Oscar, 15/8, turned out to be value as that good . . .

  • One racing person described the period of racing between Christmas and the Cheltenham Festival as "racing going into a funk."

It's true that January and February can offer us less than thrilling National Hunt racing. This past week has been a disgrace. Many days on which there were more all weather flat race meeting than those over jumps - and this in the middle of the jumps season. Crazy!

Cheltenham is now the target for so many of the best racehorses in training.

I would not blame anyone who didn't place a bet between now and Tuesday March 14th . . .

  • Happy New Year!

It's out with the old, in with the new. ITV Racing goes on air for the first time under the new contract for racing on free-to-air terrestrial television. I wish the team well. Personally, I fear this will be the last contract that allows us to watch the great sport for free on terrestrial TV.

I expect viewing figures will be up initially, if only because the best feature meetings will be transmitted on ITV1, a more populist channel.

ITV Sport will be sure to take the sport less seriously than Channel 4. In . . .

  • It's the last day of 2016. Hurrah!

Not that there is any rest for the wicked tipster or punter. New Year's Day offers a feast of racing, including a top class card at Cheltenham.

Some days the betting market ensures that punting is all about shorter priced selections. When it comes to backing favourites I want a minimum price of 11/4. Over the years my results have tended to be better when backing horses at 4/1 or bigger.

Punter be warned! For the last day of 2016 I am taking some big chances. It is an . . .

  • Vroum Vroum Mag won well on Wednesday and the early price of Evens was value.

But Djakadam was flat out and could only manage third in the race won by Outlander. A result that surprised many, especially as Don Poli finished ahead of Djakadam in second. But I am not too concerned about the outcome as it applies to the chances of Djakadam winning a big race at the Cheltenham Festival next March. Indeed, the odds for that to happen improved as a result of the race today.

There's more top quality racing in Ireland on Thursday and a . . .
