Racing tips

  • It was 1980 that I first attended the prestigous Ebor meeting on the beautiful Knavesmire racecourse at York. It remains my favourite course for flat racing.

The 2016 Ebor meeting begins on Wednesday. At a time when trainers and owners are ever more choosy about where they send their horses, it is a credit to those who run York that so many top class horses are booked to appear at the course between Wednesday and Saturday.

I shall have selections for each day of the meeting, beginning on Wednesday.

  • Mrs Danvers is the only selection to race so far on Friday and she won. The early price of 7/2 was great value and the SP price of 5/2 was also a good price. The other two selections on Friday have yet to race.

There is an acceptable spread of racing up and down the country on Saturday.

The so called garden course of Ripon stages the historic Great St.Wilfred Handicap, so often a race that delivers a big price each way winner.

Down the A1 Doncaster also stages a meeting, one at which another child of . . .

  • After several days of low class racing, I noticed online that lots of punters were bemoaning their losses in such races. The answer is simple. Do as I do. Ignore such racing.

People ask why I am so selective with race meetings these days, especially so during the flat season. It is because the plethora of poor quality races, often containing fewer than 8 runners, offer no value for punters, are staged purely for the benefit of the bookies and are trap doors for punters. Run the same race six times and you'll likely get six different winners.

    Concentrate . . .

  • With the Friday selections racing this evening, I cannot yet report on how well or badly they have performed.

So let me go directly to Saturday and Sunday.

Not at Ascot, which stages the so called Shergar Cup. Enjoy it if you are going to the Berkshire course. There are some fine horses on show, along with some good jockeys - and some not so good!

This is an event created by public relations people. The best horses will not necessarily win the best races, usually because they are having allocated to them a jockey who is not fit to be . . .

  • Hands up who remembers when a Friday of racing was a regular delight? When you could rely on the weekend to begin with quality racing. Those were the days, we thought they'd never end - as Mary Hopkin once sang.

This Friday, in the UK at least, is a celebration of low class racing. It is becoming the norm. Great if you love Class 5 and 6 crap. But if, like me, you prefer top quality racing, then you are in for disappointment. And it toubles me that this is becoming the norm.

While so much concentration of late has . . .

  • One winner and three each way profitable punts today, Friday.

Franklin D was available at 7/2 on Thursday night when I selected that one for members. Hugely backed on the day by punters, he won at a mere 7/4. Once again, early bird backers got great value.

Washington DC, tipped at 12/1, came second and would have won had the race been over another half furlong. But that still delivered nice each way profit.

Easton Angel and Rusumaat returned a little each way profit. When people say why back a horse each way at 8/1 or . . .

  • THREE RACES SELECTED ON THURSDAY. AND 3 WINNERS!

Big Orange won for us at Goodwood on Thursday and those who took the early price of 4/1, or the morning price of 9/2, were well ahead of the SP price of 11/4.

I have been banging on about how important course form is at Goodwood and Big Orange won the same race a year earlier. Despite that, jockey Jamie Spencer maintains that flat tracks are preferable for Big Orange. The undulations at Goodwood catch out many a good horse. But not Big Orange.

Rhododendron also won for us . . .

  • Some races truly are two horse events and the punter has to make a decision between two that are closely matched on form and ability, or who have met before. Some days you call the right one of the two. Other days you pick the wrong one.

I wrote yesterday of how I backed The Gurkha to beat Galileo Gold at Royal Ascot. The Gurkha was slow away that day and met trouble in running. Nevertheless, Galileo Gold won well and was stretching away at the finish.

After much debate with myself, I opted to be with Galileo Gold to . . .
