  • Fox Norton represented great value on Saturday. That is if, like me, you took the early advised price of 5/1. This looks a horse to follow in the future. The win was a facile one and the SP price was a mere 5/2.

Well backed on the day, the secret is out about Fox Norton. Put that one in your notebook for the future.

On Sunday there's some half decent racing on both sides of the Irish Sea.

  • Value, value, value. It's all about value. How often do I have to say it? Today we won via one Paul Nicholls winner, El Bandit at 13/8, but it was the winner from the same stable in the next race that represented great value.

On Thursday night the price about Marracudja was so short that I did not bother tipping this former winner for us to win again. Perhaps I should have for, incredibly, the price drifted out to as big as 3/1 on the day. A baffling price. A value price and a great one if . . .

  • Class is permanent and trainer Paul Nicholls operates a classy stable down in Ditcheat, Somerset. They've been working all summer long but it is now that the serious business begins for the multiple champion jumps trainer.

He's had a stupendous week or two, delivering form figures dominated by the figure '1' - and the National Hunt season proper has barely begun. Horses change, jockeys - like policemen - get younger. But, down at Ditcheat, one thing remains constant. The yard delivers winners time and time again.

On Friday I stride both codes of racing. The fag end of the flat season . . .

  • I always did have a soft spot for Eartha Kitt! A singer, for those of you not old enough to have spent Saturday nights watching her on television. But, more importantly, a 10/3 winner for us and trainer Tom Dascombe today.

And Materialist performed well first time on a racecourse, beaten into second but returning each way profit at 9/1.

Only two races selected on Friday, but we returned profit in each.

Saturday is all about Champions Day at Ascot. The fixture has grown in strength and depth the past few years and on Saturday the cream of . . .

  • A fellow wise and long term punter tweeted on Thursday that you should steer clear of backing short priced favourites in early season jumps races. He's right. Many of those horses are racing for the first time for several months and are racing simply to get back in the groove. They may well win, but you would be foolish to back them to do so at an odds on price.

On Friday there are several such horses racing in very small field races down at Wincanton. And there are some terrible or trappy races elsewhere, such as at Fakenham . . .

  • SWEET SELECTION wins the Cesarewith for members and lives up to her name. 10/1 when offered up as one of the each way selections, the fact the filly was 17 pounds ahead of the handicapper was what really attracted me to her. That and the jockey booking. The clues were there, staring me in the face and I am very glad I spotted them. For you and me.

The Cashel Man, another each way selection when priced at 16/1, finished fourth. So returning further profit in a race in which I seem to do well most years.

    So . . .

  • The form of the Aidan O'Brien stable goes from strength to strength. I did consider suggesting to members that they back Rhodendron and Hydrangea as a 1-2 straight forecast on Friday. Member David tells me he did precisely that. Will done that man!

I tipped Rhodendron to win and an each way saver on stablemate Hydrangea. The odds when selected were 9/2 and 6/1 respectively, so it was profit all round in that race.

Earlier, Mrs Danvers proved to be as classy as thought and took a step up in class in her stride to win . . .

  • While we have some top grade feature races to look forward to on Saturday, it's clear from Friday's cards that some horses have run their best race of the season as we approach what is the fag end of the flat season proper.

There are lots of seasoned, respectable horses racing on Friday but you cannot help but suspect their best performances are behind them - at least until May 2017.

But the quantity of big field handicaps offer myself and any fellow each way backers the opportunity to bet on a few at double figure prices. They may . . .

  • We are at that stage of the racing year when I shall soon be turning my back on the flat and concentrating on the National Hunt season as it begins for real.

What we have in the meantime is some truly awful flat racing on offer in the UK each Monday to Thursday. Never more have my 'Something for the Weekend' selections been a more appropriate title.

Yes, you can bet in low grade races at the likes of Wolverhampton, Newcastle and Windsor during each week if you want to. After all, that is what the bookies want you to . . .
