The betting market can be like the stock market. Prices do go up and down.

The swings and roundabouts of taking an early price were on show on Tuesday.

The odds for my first winner on Tuesday, BATTLEGROUND, got bigger on the day. For some reason punters were not keen on the Ryan Moore ridden winner and so the odds drifted out to 13/8. Thank you very much, bookies!

My second winner on day one of the Goodwood meeting, SPACE BLUES, was widely available at 5/2 when selected for members yesterday. Backed into 2 . . .

The ups and downs of racing were on display on Sunday when my fancy Sam Cooke was beaten by just a nose at Ascot. A nose! Painful watching.

But Santosha was a nice price winner for us at odds of 5/1. I was glad to see that one justify my confidence and you had to be pleased to see the emotional post race interview with trainer David Loughnane. I'm glad I spotted his one in what was a competitive looking race.

My Billesdon Brook was a non runner in the Valiant Fillies Stakes. I can't help but . . .

I am writing the analysis for members of VG Tips for racing on Sunday before Saturday's racing has begun. Friday went well at Newmarket with three winners for me and them from four selections at the home of flat racing.

Members come and go. For example, Keith returned this week taking advantage of the discounted annual subscription offer mentioned in this, my latest quarterly newsletter. If you simply want to subscribe to that newsletter, you can do so for free via the VG Tips . . .

It's always good when a betting day begins well. So it was when Jadwal won at Newmarket at odds of 8/1.

Nugget was also a good winner on the flat and the 15/8 on available yesterday was value compared to the 10/11 SP price. Darain also won but at a very short SP price.

So three winners from four races selected at Newmarket on Friday.

The quality of racing is better over the weekend and then next week it's all eyes on the high quality market at Goodwood.

Two horses racing on Thursday should go into your notebook.

The first was my tip Politics. A young colt racing for the first time, the penny dropped too late to finish better than second but he was doing his best work at the finish of that race, running on strongly in the closing stages in a race won by another newcomer, the Richard Fahey trained, Regional. But of the two I would definitely favour Politics going forward. The Andrew Balding trained colt will be winning races sooner or later.

The other one that looked good was the one that beat . . .

Last weekend was a busy one for all concerned with racing and a mixed one on the betting front.

I was pleased to see Nahaar finally win for us. He stepped into my 'last chance saloon' as did 11/1 each way selection Watan. They finished first and second respectively in a Class 4 handicap at Newbury. They will be allowed entry into my saloon in future. Maybe!

Our 5/1 winner Happy Romance turned out to be as well handicapped as I suspected and was heavily backed by punters on the day. The Richard Hannon . . .

I have analysed racing on Sunday before my Saturday selections have raced, so I cannot look back on whether or not we've had a good day of punting. It is certainly a busy one. So often racing schedules all its best offerings on one or two days over a weekend. If the sport could have taken stock during lockdown and come up with one idea to improve the sport, it would have been to spread the goodies across the week.

When there are no high quality festivals taking place for us to enjoy, the racing in the early and . . .

DELPHI won for us on Thursday and the early price of 3/1 was value. That comfortable winner came past the post at SP odds of 6/4.

Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien and his son Joseph take each other on again a few times over the weekend, including at the Curragh on Saturday. A Group 1 race Aidan doesn't have a great record in is the Irish Oaks. So it is that he enters four of the eight in the field for that race on Saturday. Doing his utmost to try and win the race.

    Do . . .

On Saturday we enjoyed winners via Master of the Seas (11/2), Motakhayyel  (5/1) and Mohaather (2/1) along with each way placed profit with Frontispiece (25/1), Agrigato (10/1) and Jonah Jones (8/1).

On Sunday, Pinatubo won for us at odds of 4/6. I was pleased to see him win a race at three years of age. It was the Class 1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville in France. At one stage I thought horse and jockey had blown it. They got trapped in a pocket but once they found a gap, Pinatubo accelerated away . . .

There were more non runners at Newmarket on Friday than there were people in attendance.

Inevitably very soft ground saw trainers withdraw horses they believed would not like the ground.

I cannot help but feel Magic Wand would have been very competitive in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. But that one was withdrawn leaving the two John Gosden stablemates to take each other on. Frankie Dettori chose to try and win from the front aboard Terebellum. Big mistake, Frankie. Stablemate Nazeef picked him off late on and continued his long winning run. Nazeef is a gutsy horse who . . .
