When a horse you tipped the last time out on the back of his two earlier victories, only for him to finish last of nine, goes out to win next time at odds of 40/1, you know it's not your day.

I could hardly believe my eyes when Ubettabelieveit won on Friday at such a big price. I did consider offering him as an each way option but he performed so badly last time out that I could not stick with him. Today he came out on top in a battle to the line with the favourite, Sacred . . .

Wednesday at Doncaster, when something over two thousand spectators were allowed on course, looked my ideal kind of racing day. The sun shone, those attending were nicely distanced from each other and drinks were brought to you, rather than having to push through a sea of drunk humanity to get to a beer stained bar. The only thing that would have let me down on the day would have been my bets.

What a shame that no sooner had the good people who run Doncaster racecourse put on a safe and enjoyable day of racing, than the plan to have . . .

No sooner had thousands of people set off to watch racing at Doncaster, as part of the government's test scheme to slowly return spectators to the sport, than it announced that, from next Monday, no groups of more than six people will be able to congregate in England. Go figure!

Of course, as was the case with the Cheltenham Festival in March, the news media and horse racing hating social media warriors will now pick on racing at Doncaster today, Wednesday, and possibly up to and including Saturday. It's a potential Public Relations disaster for racing once again . . .

So much debate has been had about the race in France on Sunday that saw Pintaubo arrive fast but too late to land the Prix Du Moulin race in France. The speed with which he raced the last section of the race was impressive but the winner had flown. All credit to that winner, Persian King. Well placed throughout the race, I suspect he won with something in hand.

There is an argument for saying another furlong would have led to Pinatubo winning but, in truth, we'll never know. I do my utmost to hold back from criticising jockeys . . .

ALBA ROSE was a winning NAP for me on Friday. My only selection at the lovely racecourse that is Thirsk, Alba Rose won with something to spare at odds of 11/8.

MASTER OF REALITY won a Class 1 Listed race as expected at Down Royal in Northern Ireland. 4/9 was the best price yesterday, Master of Reality came past the post at SP odds of 1/2.

The final race I selected for my attention on Friday has yet to start.

So I am getting out my deep analysis and selections for . . .

HAPPY ROMANCE was the pleasing winner for me on Thursday. Tipped when 4/1 was widely available, the filly came out on top with a late run to win a Group 3 race at Salisbury.

On a day when two of my selections were declared non runners, two newcomers let me down. Mahomes was, frankly, hopeless. Slow out of the stalls on debut he only got worse from thereon in. Trained by John Gosden makes me reluctant to totally right off the colt but he'll have to be much better of he is to win a race . . .

Top UK jockeys choosing to forego races at home in favour of racing in France or Ireland is a troubling development for many, Not because they haven't always gone overseas for good quality races. They have. More so because in the current circumstances both Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore - two of our best established flat jockeys - have been prepared to undergo two weeks of quarantine in order to ride in races where the prize money on offer is better than if were they to stay at home for a fortnight and ride in the UK. IF, of . . .

The news came on Wednesday that limited crowds will be allowed to return to certain racecourses, beginning at Doncaster in September.

That's the historic St Leger meeting which culminates with the feature race of the same name on Saturday September 12th, the same day as the always excellent Irish Champion Stakes takes place at Leopardstown.

We can only hope that the experiment of bringing crowds back to racing ends well.

When it comes to studying race form, some days you feel very confident about your selections. Other days, less so. To my mind Saturday looks tricky. There’s almost . . .

Lots of rain fell late last weekend and somewhat spoiled the chances of several horses racing at York on Saturday. Most trainers kept their horses in the races because, by the time they have transported them there, they may as well give them a run even if they believe the horses will hate turf that had turned soft. But there can be no doubt that the outcome of a few races last weekend were different from how things would have turned out but for the downpour.

Nonetheless, elsewhere on Saturday, there were some that caught they eye and deserve to . . .

It's been a week at York when the stars have lived up to their top billing.

Ghaiyyath and Love have delivered performances we have grown to expect and won their respective races at odds on prices but, to my mind, odds that still represented value when you consider how good those horses are and how comfortably they won their races. The delightful Love was far too good for her opposition on Thursday. I love it when she is sitting comfortably while all the others are being pushed along by despairing jockeys.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien confirmed her next race . . .
