We saw on Wednesday that winning experience on the Knavesmire racecourse at York counts for plenty.

El Astronaute won the first race on the day despite coming out of a seemingly unfavourable stall 18. If a horse likes York, it matters. For some reason even some of the better horses do not like the place. Or at least they don't act their best there.

Prior placed or winning experience at York is no guarantee of further success, but when I look at the form of those that have raced their often, I am struck by how consistent the majority . . .

A dry week is forecast for the beautiful setting for racing that is the Knavesmire at York.

Favourites often let punters down at this meeting, which makes bookies happy. Not all horses like York and if you can find one that has won here in the past, that's always worth noting. You cannot always presume that horses that have won at the likes of Newmarket, Goodwood or Epsom will do well at York.

Local trainers often do well here. The Easterby brothers, Mark Johnston, Richard Fahey and Kevin Ryan. Another factor to take note of.

    Day one of the . . .

No weather forecaster can get it right all the time. Just as we punters cannot. At the time I send this out on Friday, three of my fancies today have flopped. Surprising. Two are left to race, including this evening.

Technology has vastly improved the accuracy of weather forecasts compared to when I began watching racing decades ago. For racecourses in the UK, the Met Office website is the most trusted. Of course rain can come hours earlier than they predict, or not at all. Some days, even the Met Office, like me so far today, fire blanks.

    Their predictions . . .

Last Friday saw me deliver three winners from four races selected.

Showout at 2/1, Firelight at 9/4 and Beatboxer at Evens all won. I told members the night before racing that Frankie Dettori was travelling all the way up to Haydock to ride Beatboxer, his only ride on that card when he could easily have stayed closer to home in the south and ridden some horses for trainer John Gosden. I suggested members took the hint. And they did. Trainer and jockey combined with that winner. Make a note of Beatboxer. The colt now has three Group 2 . . .

Showout won for us at Brighton this afternoon at improved odds of 2/1.

The remaining three races selected for Friday take place this evening.

So I go straight on to the racing on Saturday.

As stated previously, I don't get involved in the Shergar Cup meeting staged at Ascot each year. It's not for punters. Why? Because the best horses often fail to win. Why? Because some of them are being ridden by jockeys that are not good enough, some of them from overseas.

This whole Britain against the Rest of the World nonsense is a competition . . .

Guaranteed price betting allows a punter to benefit if the price about a selection improves between the time when you placed your bet, and the finish of a race.

The first of two selections on Thursday, Marhaba Milliar, was priced up odds on when the betting market opened on Wednesday night. Thankfully for us punters the SP price was better, 11/10. So be sure to use a bookie offering GP terms. That way you'll get the best price available.

As an example to non members of the detail I send to VG Tips subscribers, here is what I . . .

I write, publish and mail out this write up for Saturday at Goodwood before the racing on Friday has even begun.

So far the total is as follows. On day 1 I tipped 3 winners from 4 races selected for members.

On day 2 we had one winner and 2 double figure priced each way selections finish in the places, so returning decent profit.

On day 3, from four races selected for analysis, we had one winner and 2 further each way selections placed.

To my punting mind, that is a case of so far, so good at Goodwood.

    This . . .

The well backed on the day Land Force proved once again that there really is no point in waiting IF you have decided to back a particular horse. The first price about Land Force on Wednesday afternoon was 6/1 while 11/2 and 5/1 was still available overnight. The SP price when Land Force won the Richmond Stakes was a mere 5/2. The early bird punter grabs the best value once again.

There was also some decent each way profit on Wednesday. I did like the look of my 16/1 each way tip Zaman which was . . .

Well I did suggest that Lil Rockerfeller could be 10 pounds better off at the handicap than the opposition in the opening race of the day on Wednesday. So it proved. Lil Rockerfeller won easily, by a whopping 15 lengths.

At odds of 4/1 and 7/2 the night before racing, he represented massive value in the betting market. Even at SP odds of 11/4, Lil Rockerfeller was a good price winner. As a punter it's nice to have one so far ahead of the field that you know long before the winning post that you are . . .
