  • Soon the top class race meetings will be with us.

We can look forward to the Betfair Chase at Haydock this Saturday, the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury the week after and then - before we know it - the feast of racing on offer on Boxing Day.

Fear not. Still time to shop for and wrap up your Christmas presents. If you care about racing and the welfare of jockeys, why not consider buying yourself or a loved one a present from the Injured Jockeys Fund.

This very hard working and . . .

  • Don't you just love it when serious rainfall alters the going at a racecourse on the day of racing?

    NO! Neither do I.

The weather is sometimes the most dangerous opponent and there can be no doubt that some horses set to enjoy racing at Cheltenham on Saturday, hated it once the ground turned soft.

Paul Nicholls rightly withdrew one of my naps before the race once it became clear the going was too soft. But others were left to race on ground that was not suitable on the day.

We did have two winners at shortish prices. Batazar . . .

  • It's painful when one you really fancy is beaten by a head. I had a good feeling about the Irish trained Pairofbrowneyes and to be caught on the line was a great shame but, once again, proof that sometimes it is wise to play safe and be on each way even if the price is as short as 13/2.

Well backed into 4/1 on the day, I was relieved to get my stake back along with a tiny bit of profit. It eased the pain a little when watching him beaten at the death.

    Keep Its'afreebee . . .

  • Cheltenham... a name that warms the heart of any fan of National Hunt racing.  At a time when so much of the midweek racing is worse than watching Emmerdale, the sight of racing at Prestbury Park lifts the spirits and whets the appetite for race meetings there in December and, of course, for the glory that is the Cheltenham Festival in March of 2017.

On Saturday we can look forward to the Bet Victor GoldCup (formerly the Paddy Power Gold Cup). A race I have always liked and 19 are set to go to post so I am hopeful of . . .

  • Don't you just hate it when your horse is leading but then falls at the final fence? That was the fate that befell our 7/2 fancy Southfield Theatre on Saturday. But the Paul Nicholls horse is reported to be none the worse for the tumble, and that's all that matters.

Long time members will recall the day that I was on two at good each way prices as they both approached the final fence well clear of the rest. I wanted the bigger price of the two to win, ideally, but didn't care too much as . . .

  • It's time for fireworks, parking, pie & peas and to set light to a figure stuffed full of paper and straw. At least it was when I was a lad. Frankly, I have no idea what happens when November 5th falls on a Saturday in this day and age. I'm guessing people now pay money to attend official fireworks displays. Some racecourses even stage them. They have to make money how and when they can.

Before night falls on Saturday there will be racing up and down the UK. As far south as Wincanton. As far north as . . .

  • Why do I bang on about prices and potential value?

Today Dusky Legend won for us and was available at 15/8 when selected. That one came past the post at an SP of 11/8. So getting on early was the best bet.

But, up at Musselburgh, I also told you to wait to see if all 8 horses went to post before betting on Arthur's Secret, each way, at the odds of 9/1 available 24 hours ago.

That was because if only 7 raced the bookies would return each way bets about the first two only . . .

  • This time next week I will already be studying form for the first day of a very good meeting that begins at Prestbury Park, Cheltenham, on Friday November 11th.

Then, at the end of the month, comes the Hennessy Gold Cup meeting at Newbury, beginning on Friday November 25th. I will be attending that two day meeting and I am looking forward to it greatly.

But prior to that we have lesser race meetings such as those on offer on Thursday. At Newbury, the poor meeting kicks off with a three horse race. Later on the card there is even . . .
