  • So the weekend went well not only with a 16/1 winner at the races, but also with several winning bets on football matches.

The single bet wins were:- Fulham at 28/17, Nottingham Forest at 19/10, Derby County at 11/10, Middlesbrough at 9/4, Portsmouth at 21/20, Leeds at 4/6 and both teams to score in the game between Spurs and Chelsea at odds of 8/13.

A surprise win by Huddersfield Town at Wolves brought down my 9/1, four teams to win accumulator. The first time in 23 matches that Huddersfield have scored . . .

  • One manager has lost his job in the Premier League. Another must be entering the last chance saloon. Over in Ireland, meanwhile, Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane have finally left the Republic of Ireland.

How much the FAI had to pay them to go we'll likely never know. Officially it's the old "left by mutual agreement" line being trotted out by the Football Association of Ireland. Their mistake was in offering O'Neill and Keane a new improved contract and it has cost them dearly. This is quite possibly the worst Republic of Ireland side of my . . .

  • At the time of writing, no Premier League manager has been sacked so far this season. A pleasant surprise.

Sam Allardyce will have his mobile telephone ringtone on loud setting as he struts his stuff on the dancefloor of a Marbella nightclub.

Which club owner will call him, International Rescue fashion?

Southampton? Fulham? Those two struggling sides play each other at Craven Cottage on September 24th. The manager of each club has to be under the threat of the sack should their team lose that game.

But that is more than a week away. This midweek and weekend we have . . .

  • The relegation dogfight at the foot of the Premier League looks like being much more of a contest than who will win the league.

The best hope of survival for Cardiff and Huddersfield is that the likes of Burnley, Fulham, Southampton, Newcastle and Crystal Palace all in danger of dropping out of the top flight. It's only October but, right now, it looks as though it is three from seven to drop down into the Championship.

Who spends best in the January transfer window is crucial. We know the Newcastle owner will not spend a penny. If manager Rafa . . .

  • Last weekend went well when it came to my single bet football tips. Leeds United won for us again, this time at odds of 6/5. Prior to that game, I suggested members should back them to win the Championship this season at odds of 4/1. Following their weekend win at Wigan, the best price for the now table topping Leeds is 7/2. Still decent odds.

Other winning tips last weekend included a win for Norwich at odds of 29/20, Leicester City (NAP) at 6/5, Colchester United at 21/20, Portsmouth at 3/4 and both . . .

  • So last weekend went well on the betting front. With the exception of Arsenal, who chose Sunday to be the first match in 12 that they did not win. They were the final team in my otherwise successful accumulator.

There were single wins last weekend for Norwich City at 7/5, Peterborough at 9/5, Barnsley at 8/15, Barcelona at 1/2 and Manchester City at 3/4.

That's five winning tips from six selected. The Derby Win/Draw No Bet tip saw our stake returned when they drew 1-1 at Middlesbrough.

Following on from what was . . .

  • I have never understood why so much was made of the Bill Shankly quote about football being more serious than life and death. Never fathomed why it has been repeated so often. Shankly was a fantastic football manager and manager of men. I do wonder if, were he alive today, he'd think again about that quote.

Today football is mourning the loss of that rare beast, a foreign owner of a club who actually cared about football, the community of Leicester as a whole and who was in the game for the right reasons. There are many owners who . . .

  • Following the midweek matches, it looks as though the Champions League this season is wide open. At least for a fair number of clubs.

Tottenham and Manchester United let down their supporters and can kiss goodbye to being involved in the final stages of the competition.

But Liverpool and Manchester City won and top their respective Groups. You can get 2/1 about the tournament winners coming from England.

Atletico Madrid have disappointed this season and were well beaten by a Borussia Dortmund side that are being overlooked so far this season. They have won all their three matches, scoring . . .

  • When a prodigal son returns to a former club, does destiny dictate that player will score? It often appears that way.

Cristiano Ronaldo must surely get a warm welcome from Manchester United supporters as he returns to Old Trafford in the colours of Juventus.

He was never going to be able to score as many goals in Italian football as he did during so may years with Real Madrid. He has, however, kept himself extraordinarily fit, so ensuring that the young man who long ago graced English football, will continue to play at the highest level at an age when . . .

  • Domestic action returns this weekend following an international break that saw England beat Spain in a feisty and fascinating game that saw England win 2-3 with the youngest England starting 11 since 1959.

The first time Spain have conceded three goals in a competitive game. First competitive home defeat for Spain in 15 years and the first England win in Spain in 31 years.

All credit to Gareth Southgate for the way he manages players, encouraging the likes of Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford.

The level of abuse aimed at those players from armchair managers in recent times has . . .
