  • So he's gone. Jose Mourinho has left the building. Not before time. A club that once boasted entertainers such as George Best, Denis Law, Bobby Charlton and Eric Cantona has sunk to a depth of performance the likes of which I have not witnessed since 1974. And, no, I am not a Manchester United supporter.

Quality modern day players were undermined by Mourinho. Some were bullied. A few insulted, privately and publicly. Some others - expensive purchases and of his choosing - were 'sent to Coventry.'

I swear that had Manchester United signed Lionel Messi, he'd have been played as . . .

  • I am just about over it. Almost. I speak of the gut wrenching magnificent 7 acca falling down last weekend only because Manchester City chose last Saturday to lose a football match.

Six of the other teams tipped to win last weekend, and placed in that accumulator, all won. Arsenal, Stoke, Norwich, Luton, Doncaster Rovers and MK Dons.

Now I have never cashed out a bet in my punting life. I've always looked upon cashing out as a chickens way of betting. But why oh why did I not spend the half hour between those six teams winning their . . .

  • As the January transfer window looms, football club owners begin to get twitchy.

Should they stick or twist when it comes to their team manager or head coach? Some have already twitched. Southampton players can look forward to a completely different style of manager coming their way. Under former Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhuttl they will be working much harder, pressing opponents with much more gusto. This change in manager should see the Saints stay up.

Fulham already made the change and, even though they sit bottom of the Premier League right now, I'd like to think that Claudio Ranieri . . .

  • So the weekend went well not only with a 16/1 winner at the races, but also with several winning bets on football matches.

The single bet wins were:- Fulham at 28/17, Nottingham Forest at 19/10, Derby County at 11/10, Middlesbrough at 9/4, Portsmouth at 21/20, Leeds at 4/6 and both teams to score in the game between Spurs and Chelsea at odds of 8/13.

A surprise win by Huddersfield Town at Wolves brought down my 9/1, four teams to win accumulator. The first time in 23 matches that Huddersfield have scored . . .

  • One manager has lost his job in the Premier League. Another must be entering the last chance saloon. Over in Ireland, meanwhile, Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane have finally left the Republic of Ireland.

How much the FAI had to pay them to go we'll likely never know. Officially it's the old "left by mutual agreement" line being trotted out by the Football Association of Ireland. Their mistake was in offering O'Neill and Keane a new improved contract and it has cost them dearly. This is quite possibly the worst Republic of Ireland side of my . . .

  • At the time of writing, no Premier League manager has been sacked so far this season. A pleasant surprise.

Sam Allardyce will have his mobile telephone ringtone on loud setting as he struts his stuff on the dancefloor of a Marbella nightclub.

Which club owner will call him, International Rescue fashion?

Southampton? Fulham? Those two struggling sides play each other at Craven Cottage on September 24th. The manager of each club has to be under the threat of the sack should their team lose that game.

But that is more than a week away. This midweek and weekend we have . . .

  • The relegation dogfight at the foot of the Premier League looks like being much more of a contest than who will win the league.

The best hope of survival for Cardiff and Huddersfield is that the likes of Burnley, Fulham, Southampton, Newcastle and Crystal Palace all in danger of dropping out of the top flight. It's only October but, right now, it looks as though it is three from seven to drop down into the Championship.

Who spends best in the January transfer window is crucial. We know the Newcastle owner will not spend a penny. If manager Rafa . . .

  • Last weekend went well when it came to my single bet football tips. Leeds United won for us again, this time at odds of 6/5. Prior to that game, I suggested members should back them to win the Championship this season at odds of 4/1. Following their weekend win at Wigan, the best price for the now table topping Leeds is 7/2. Still decent odds.

Other winning tips last weekend included a win for Norwich at odds of 29/20, Leicester City (NAP) at 6/5, Colchester United at 21/20, Portsmouth at 3/4 and both . . .
