  • It’s a long time since I came across such a non story receving so much publicity. I refer to the revelation that is the planned England starting 11 for their match against Panama.

The usually very cautious assistant to manager Gareth Southgate was careless when carrying a piece of paper with the names on it. Photographers were able to capture the image. What followed was some utter hogwash from players past and present about how sports journalists should not print those details.

    1. It is their job to do so. They would be failing in their job if they . . .

  • Luck can get you a long way in a World Cup. But only so far.

Portugal were fortunate to get a draw in the best game of the tournament so far, that 3-3 draw against Spain.

Today Portugal scored early but were hanging on to that 1-0 winning margin up to the end of their match against Morocco - who had plenty of chances to score themselves.

Ronaldo was 16/1 to be top scorer at the World Cup before the first match took place. He is now the favourite after scoring four goals in Portugal's opening two . . .

  • So the World Cup has begun and what have we learned so far?

Cristiano Ronaldo is reliable at penalty taking, great at free kicks and perfect at diving. Nobody cons referees like Ronaldo. He has it off to a fine art.

Something Gerard Pique should have known only too well before he went close to Ronaldo just outside the penalty area and in the dying minutes of the thrilling 3-3 draw between Spain and Portugal.

Pique offered Ronaldo the opportunity to fall down, pretending there had been contact and so fooling a gullible ref for the second time in . . .

  • Allow me to scream. Let me get this out of my system. I DON’T BELIEVE IT!!!

No sooner had I finished typing up my World Cup analysis and tips for members of VG Tips - which I have been doing from dawn and for 12 hours - then Spain sack their national football team manager 24 hours before the tournament begins and two days before Spain play their opening match against Portugal.

What kind of tournament suicide is this? Yes, I know the governing body of Spanish football was annoyed that, having signed a contract extension with them only last month . . .

  • So the deed is done. Cautious Carlos Carvalhal has paid the price for not not playing a proven goalscorer in Tammy Abraham and for reverting to type. For doing what he did previously at Sheffield Wednesday and trying to win football matches while playing, at most, one man up front. Why did he do it again? I don't know. Did he learn nothing from the meek manner in which his Wednesday said lost the Championship play off semi-final to Huddersfield? Clearly not.

Swansea City have confirmed that the man they almost offered a secure contract to in February . . .

  • So who among you predicted Huddersfield Town would get a 0-0 draw away at Manchester City, and on the very day the Champions were presented with the Premier League trophy?

    No, not me either.

I have never known a football season like this past one. It has been the most extraordianry, unpredictable one that I can remember.

This past weekend alone, in addition to that amazing result in Manchester, we saw relegated Sunderland beat Champions Wolves 3-0 and Cardiff only manage to draw 0-0 at home against a poor Reading side. Not that it prevented Cardiff being . . .

  • I don't envy those football supporters who face a nervous weekend.

I'd much rather settle for mid table mediocrity than be involved in a relegation battle.

It's horrible, as a fan, to go into the last game of the season needing a point or three for your team to stay up. You have one eye on the match in front of you, and one ear tuned to the radio to hear how other clubs are getting on. Or worse, you rely on the Chinese whispers coming at you from all directions in the crowd. The number of . . .

  • It should be a gripping weekend next Saturday and Sunday as the domestic football season comes to a boiling point.

In the Championship, it's the last set of fixtures on Sunday May 6th.

Cardiff need only to win at home against hopeless Reading for them to be promoted to the Premier League. Fulham must go to Birmingham, who should escape relegation but are not mathematically safe. All Fulham can do is win and hope that Cardiff slip up. Unlikely.

That would leave Fulham in the play offs along with Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and either Derby, Preston or Millwall.

    Derby . . .

  • What a performance from Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Roma.

And what about those goals from Mo Salah. Fabulous finishing.

It's not what any of their fans will want to hear right now, but Liverpool will really have their work cut out to keep him at Anfield. You would imagine that next January, or during the summer of 2019, the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona will come calling for his services. If, that is, he proves not to be a one season flash in the pan. I think he is anything . . .
