  • Watford won for members of VG Tips at odds of 9/5 last weekend. A good price for a revived team that won comfortably against fellow relegation candidates, Bournemouth.

The both teams to score betting market can be a profitable one even when the price on offer is an odds on one. Brentford versus QPR and Barnsley versus Huddersfield delivered for us on that front, each at odds of 3/4.

Doncaster Rovers won for us at odds of 31/20, Portsmouth won at odds of at 1/2 and Exeter City returned further profit when winning at odds of . . .

  • It's been a ludicrously busy period of football south of the border. It's widely accepted now that football teams are being asked to play too many matches. But, of course, money talks and the richer clubs, along with those who supposedly run the sport, don't believe in the saying that more is less.

I am struck at how football is putting quantity before quality at the very time that the British Horseracing Authority is foolishly considering extending the Cheltenham Festival from four days to five (a festival that should have always remained at three days). When will . . .

  • Has the FA cup lost it's lustre? Is the magic still there? Clearly not for many managers. You can't really blame those from overseas. The FA Cup is not in their DNA. Why should it be? They may hail from countries where domestic cup competitions are not as all important as the FA Cup has been for me and my generation of football supporter for by far the majority of my lifetime.

Those clubs that do still take it seriously, and field strong teams, have a serious opportunity of winning silverware. True, the days of a Wigan or . . .

  • So that's that then. It's a done deal. Many bookies have already paid out on those who backed Liverpool to win the Premier League. Before January dawns. Incredible!

Last summer I fully intended to be one of those punters. I fancied Liverpool to win the league and Manchester City for the Champions League. A role reversal on the previous season. Then, when it came to my writing up the pre-season tips back in August, I changed my mind. I have no idea why I did that. I cannot recall. But I have been kicking myself for so . . .

  • So now we know Liverpool are imperious, don't we? Surely the thrashing of then second placed Leicester City proves it. Only Manchester United and Everton fans would deny the fact that Liverpool are back at the top of the tree.

Success breeds success and Liverpool employing Jurgen Klopp as their manager was the best move they could have made. The right man at the right club. It doesn't often happen that way. Some good managers can find themselves at a basket case of a football club. Right now there is a Premier League club whose owners want to . . .

  • Tis the season to be jolly. So they say. But for those who manage football clubs, and the players, it is a busy and nervous time of the year. It can also be a decisive one.

For example, it's rare that the team bottom of the Premier League on December 25th survives being relegated come May. That means Watford had better hope for more good fortune the likes of which Manchester United presented them with in their previous game.

The managers of Southampton and West Ham continue to wonder if their next game will be their last one.

    I . . .

  • Scottish tipster Robert Ryan outdid me last week with wins for Airdrie, Ayr, Aberdeen, Cove and East Fife. Five winning tips from seven selections.

For my part, the reliable Eoin Doyle scored once again for Swindon Town. The League 2 table toppers are going to have their work cut out keeping his on loan services when the January transfer market opens. He was a 10/11 NAP to score on home soil last weekend. Value.

Peterborough also won for me, as did both teams to score in the match between Wolves and Spurs. But it was Monday night before a . . .

  • Jim Smith died this week. Another football manager of yesteryear gone and a bloody good one at that. The list of clubs he managed is endless. The so called 'bald eagle' was in demand at a time when owners of football clubs were not obsessed with hiring coaches from abroad. When they didn't think a manager would be better simply because their surname ended in a vowel.

The reluctance of so called big clubs to even consider British managers these days is a reflection on how myopic football club Chairman can be. Brendan Rodgers is doing a great job . . .

  • As warned last week, new manager syndrome kicked in at Goodison Park last weekend. Amazing, isn't it? How footballers who have been awful for one manager for several weeks can suddenly come to life and remember what it takes to win football matches. Is it becuse they have achieved their mission, namely to have that manager sacked? Or is it because the outgoing manager was no good? or both?

Duncan Ferguson certainly got a tune out of the Everton players who faced Chelsea. Previously woeful, Everton sparked into life and got up and at the Chelsea boys, winning 3 . . .

  • The winning midweek tips were Leciester City to win to nil at odds of 11/8. Jamie Vardy to score anytime for them at odds of 4/6. Both teams to score in the match between Chelsea and Aston Villa at 4/5 and a win for Wolves at odds of 4/5.

I didn't see Liverpool beating Everton 5-2 in the Merseyside derby. So often over the years, this clash of the teams on opposite sides of Stanley Park has resulted in a low scoring game. But Everton are so bad now that Liverpool went through them . . .
