  • The winning weekend tips - six from ten offered - were:- Middlesbrough at 9/5, both teams to score Tottenham v Fulham at Evens, Everton at 19/20, Portsmouth 10/11, Leeds 4/9 and Brentford to win at 6/10.

It almost goes without saying that this is very early in the season and the make up of the leagues will look different in May compared to now. But it is encouraging for me that the three teams I predicted would be relegated from the Championship come the end of the season, are the current bottom three. Also a club I . . .

  • So that all went rather well for VG Tips subscribers on the first full weekend of league fixtures in England.

9 single winning bets from my 12 selections and that 34/1 winning treble for us when Barnsley, Accrington Stanley and Leeds United all won.

The other accumulator I tipped up, for 5 teams to win at odds of 20/1, saw four of those sides win but Wolves only manage a 2-2 draw. So, for the sake of one more goal, that acca went . . .

  • It's that time. Out comes my crystal ball. I wish I had a time machine. Wouldn't it be great if, as a punter, we could travel forward to May of 2019 and see which football teams had gone up and down. Then we travel back to now and place our bets. Sadly only Dr. Who can do that. So I must make do with research, knowledge of what has happened in the past, the current state of play at certain clubs and that most favoured characteristic of mine - gut feeling.

  • I write this with 12 hours of the transfer window remaining for English football clubs. The European transfer market stays open for much longer. Like turkeys voting for Christmas, the Premier League clubs who voted for the domestic transfer window to close so early in August may be wishing they hadn't.

My season long predictions post and e-mail will be mailed out Friday, once we know all about any final transfer deals.

Predicting match results so early in a new season can resemble a lottery. You have little or no previous season form to go on and early . . .

  • So here we are at the beginning of another domestic English football season. The World Cup is but a distant memory and now we get down to the brass tacks of a season long campaign.

The season begins this weekend in the Championship, League 1 and League 2 only. The Premier League kicks off one week later.

For those of you wondering where are my traditional pre-season predictions for promotion and relegation, I am waiting for the transfer window to close on August 9th. I suspect there will be quite a bit of panic buying of players in the . . .

  • England are out of the World Cup.

What began so well with England all over Croatia in the first half - and some members of VG Tips being on the 22/1 Kieran Trippier (the England player who has impressed me the most) anytime goalscorer bet I mentioned in passing - ended with England having weary legs, looking disorganised and capitulating to Croatia, losing the semi-final 2-1 in extra time.

At half time the Croatian manager told his players that this would be the last chance for most of them to reach a World Cup final. He told them England . . .

  • In my experience, World Cups tend to get better as the tournament progresses. This year in Russia has been no different. There has been plenty to talk about. VAR has divided opinion. England fans should welcome it, so far at least. The presence of VAR has reduced the overall amount of grappling of attackers at set pieces and England have done best at corners and free kicks.

This has been an exciting World Cup. The most eventful and included some truly great goals. But don't tell me the quality of the football played has been the purest. It hasn . . .

  • So here we are at the quarter final stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. What have we learned and which pre-tournament fancies have so far paid off?

We have learned some things we sort of knew already. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo cannot win a World Cup for Argentina or Portugal on their own.

An era of glorious Spanish football has come to an end. Andres Iniesta joins his friend Xavi in retiring from International football and with it begins a period of rebuilding and deep thinking for Spain. Passing the ball a zillion times is all . . .

  • That was 93 minutes of my life I shall never get back.

I refer to the bore that was the game between Belgium reserves and England reserves, the former coming out on top by the only goal of the game. Clearly the Belgium goalscorer did not receive the memo saying that the object of the game was to make sure they did not win.

Belgium made 9 changes to their line up. England manager Gareth Southgate made 8 changes. A decision made before the outcome of games earlier that day that resulted in Japan being the immediate opponents for Belgium . . .
