Football tips

  • This weekend will be a terrible one for the faithful fans who followed Bury FC for decades. Imagine going into a weekend of football and the name of the club you support not being there on the list of fixtures. Not hearing their result read out. Simply not being able to go to a game after a working week.

Bury is not the first football team to suffer extinction in my lifetime and, depending on how long I am around, it likely will not be the last. A shameful turn of events and an unfit for office English Football League . . .

  • Two of the three sides promoted to the Premier League last season won their first home games back in the top flight. I had fancied all three to do that last weekend, but Aston Villa let me down.

Norwich City swept aside an impotent Newcastle team and Sheffield United did what I expected them to do this season, prove those critics who are ignorant of their playing style so very wrong.

As I said in my pre-season predictions analysis, the promoted teams often stay up in the first season back. The opponents don't know what they're facing . . .

  • A winning treble at odds of 9/1 and it's only the third week of the season. Thank you Fulham, Leeds and Lincoln. Always nice to know we are ahead of the bookie with football accumulators so early in the season.

Single winning bets in the English leagues included Lyle Taylor scoring for Charlton at odds of 11/5, Lincoln winning at 10/11 (NAP), a Fulham win at odds of 8/5 along with home wins for Norwich City and Sheffield United. Not bad. But, for the second time running, anything I can do Robert Ryan up in . . .

  • Last weekend went very well, especially so up in Scotland where long time VG Tips member Robert Ryan contributed 5 winning tips from 5 selections for fellow subscribers to my selections service.

Rob knows his Scottish football and delivered winning bets at odds of up to 14/5 last weekend, including the surprising St Mirren win against Aberdeen.

  • As I write, the transfer window for the Premier League and Championship is closing.

It has been a  busy pre-season transfer market. Spend, spend, spend for those who can afford it. Or can they?

Harry Maguire, at £80+ million has become the most expensive defender in the world, signing for Manchester United. Across Manchester, Champions Man City have spent £60 million each on two players.

Some of the fees I have seen lower down the Premier League and Championship are, in their own, just as crazy. Some clubs have paid over the odds, for sure.

    One player staying put . . .

  • It's that time. Out comes my crystal ball. I wish I had a time machine. Wouldn't it be great if, as a punter, we could travel forward to May of 2020 and see which football teams had gone up and which dropped down a division. Then we could travel back to now and place our bets. Boom!

Sadly, unlike the television show 'Time Tunnel' which I watched as a child, there is no such facility. I will have to make do with the level of research and knowledge of what has happened in the past that has served . . .

  • That's a first! In the notoriously hard to call EFL play off finals, I called all three right when it came to which teams would be promoted. A hat trick of winning football tips on Bank Holiday weekend to accompany the 7 winners from 9 horse races selected for members across Saturday and Sunday.

Having backed Tranmere, Charlton and Aston Villa as single bets weeks ago, I'm feeling rather pleased with myself. I backed them all in the 'To Qualify/To Be Promoted market as that's the safest option. So often the play off finals go to . . .

  • It's play off final weekend.

I rallied against the play offs when they were first brought in all those years ago. I'm old fashioned. I happen to believe that if three teams are to be promoted from one division to another, it should be the top three. Not the top two and, perhaps, the side that finished sixth.

But I've lost that battle. The play offs, like so many other games staged at Wembley, exist to pay off the vast debts owed on the stadium. I've attended two play off finals. One when the old Wembley . . .

  • So Leeds United have blown it. What seemed unthinkable a few months ago - before 'Spygate' - has happened. Leeds players have 'bottled' what looked like certain automatic promotion. Now they've lost the play off semi-final to Derby County.

While I hope it doesn't mean we've seen the last of Marcelo Bielsa in English football, I am delighted for Derby manager Frank Lampard. To go to Elland Road having lost the first leg was going to require some effort from the Rams but they saw off Leeds and Derby will now meet Aston Villa in the final.

    I . . .
