  • The winning tips last weekend included wins for QPR at odds of 5/2, AFC Wimbledon at 21/20, Yeovil at 8/5 and Derby County at 1/2.

While inconsistency is the most consistent factor on display in football these days, certain clubs have been reliable of late.

As I forecast some time ago, Antonio Conte has made Chelsea hard to beat. They have won their last six league matches 'to nil.'

In the Championship, Newcastle and Brighton look imperious right now and I expect both clubs to be in the Premier League next season.

    But we punters must . . .

  • International games in midweek did deliver me one very nice win. I took the price of 10/3 offered by William Hill about the Republic of Ireland winning in Austria.

Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane have continued to improve the Irish squad. They are a much better side than the one I saw play live a couple of years ago.

They are looking good and performing well. Their World Cup qualifying match at home against Wales next March looks like being a very important tie for both countries.

    England beat a Scotland side that couldn't score in a . . .

  • England play Scotland on Friday night. A match that has always had special meaning for supporters of both countries . I was there - at the old Wembley - when Scottish fans tore down the goalposts and swung from the crossbar.
When the Tartan Army were not only at Rod Stewart concerts, but walking down Wembley way wearing their tam-o-shanters and kilts.

The game this Friday is a World Cup qualifier and one England are expected to win on home soil. Scotland manager Gordon Strachan is hanging on to his job by a thread and sorely needs his players to put . . .

  • We enjoyed a 7/1 winning treble last weekend thanks to victories by Sheffield United, Plymouth and Stoke City. Sometimes it can pay to limit the number of clubs you place in an accumulator. This was one of those times. But I still love chancing my arm with a magnificent 7 some weeks. We've enjoyed some big paying accumulator wins in times past. It doesn't get easier to find one but this weekend might be a good opportunity for a multi club accumulator bet.

The FA Cup, that once glittering, all important domestic cup competition returns this weekend . . .

  • Jose Mourinho says his life is "a nightmare." Yes, it must be hell living in an expensive hotel in Manchester. Imagine how much better his life could be. He might be living in Aleppo, wondering where the next bomb will be dropped. Whether he'll be gassed or simply blown apart. The poor man!

Mourinho is a manager on the cusp of becoming a spent force. Yesterday's man. And he knows it. He must succeed at Manchester United or the next job is likely to be a much less high profile one. The top two German clubs will not . . .

  • A 50% success in midweek with three winning tips from the six.

There will be some tired legs among the Premier League teams that played in European competition in midweek. It is a fact that teams can struggle in their next league match, especially if they have traveled home from afar.

Outside of the Premier League managerial comings and goings continue. Steve Bruce is getting his feet under the table at troubled Aston Villa, while struggling Rotherham United sacked Alan Stubbs and want the admirable Kenny Jackett to replace him.

The most likely winners, at odds on prices . . .

  • Some managers are firefighters. Neil Warnock, who said years ago that he was going to retire, has joined Cardiff City. The latest in a long list of football clubs he has managed. Last season he pulled off a minor miracle in keeping Rotherham up. And he has got off to a good start at Cardiff by having them beat Bristol City last Friday night.

One of Warnock's former clubs, Sheffield United, had a bad start to the season but are now looking like genuine promotion candidates in League 1.

While so much of the attention of late has been . . .
